About

NSA Insiders Reveal What Went Wrong

January 7, 2014

In a memo to President Obama, former National Security Agency insiders explain how NSA leaders botched intelligence collection and analysis before 9/11, covered up the mistakes, and violated the constitutional rights of the American people, all while wasting billions of dollars and misleading the public.

January 7, 2014

MEMORANDUM FOR: The President

FROM: Former NSA Senior Executives/Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity (VIPS)

SUBJECT: Input for Your Decisions on NSA

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Official Washington – from Senate Intelligence Committee chair Dianne Feinstein to NSA Director Keith Alexander to former Vice President Dick Cheney to former FBI Director Robert Mueller – has been speaking from the same set of NSA talking points acquired recently via a Freedom of Information request. It is an artful list, much of it designed to mislead. Take this one, for example:

– NSA AND ITS PARTNERS MUST MAKE SURE WE CONNECT THE DOTS SO THAT THE NATION IS NEVER ATTACKED AGAIN LIKE IT WAS ON 9/11nationalsecurityagency

At a hearing of the Senate Judiciary Committee on October 2, Senator Feinstein showed her hand when she said: “I will do everything I can to prevent this [NSA’s bulk] program from being canceled.” Declaring that 9/11 “can never be allowed to happen in the United States of America again,” Feinstein claimed that intelligence officials did not have enough information to prevent the terrorist attacks.

Mr. President, we trust you are aware that the lack-of-enough-intelligence argument is dead wrong. Feinstein’s next dubious premise – that bulk collection is needed to prevent another 9/11 – is unproven and highly unlikely (not to mention its implications for the privacy protections of the Fourth Amendment).

Given the closed circle surrounding you, we are allowing for the possibility that the smell from these rotting red herrings has not yet reached you – even though your own Review Group has found, for example, that NSA’s bulk collection has thwarted exactly zero terrorist plots.

Right. So it takes 12 years for some boob to splash around what every single person in the intelligence community would tell you over a coffee on Sept 12. President GW Shrub was more correct than he ever realized when he called it the Pearl Harbour of this century.

^ If you only knew nick_nuts if you only knew...... PNAC. nuff said.

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_for_the_New_American_Century

"New Pearl Harbor"

Section V of Rebuilding America's Defenses, entitled "Creating Tomorrow's Dominant Force", includes the sentence: "Further, the process of transformation, even if it brings revolutionary change, is likely to be a long one, absent some catastrophic and catalyzing event––like a new Pearl Harbor" (51).[15]

Though not arguing that Bush administration PNAC members were complicit in those attacks, other social critics such as journalist Mark Danner,[40] investigative journalist John Pilger, in New Statesman,[41] and former editor of The San Francisco Chronicle Bernard Weiner, in CounterPunch,[42] all argue that PNAC members used the events of 9/11 as the "Pearl Harbor" that they needed––that is, as an "opportunity" to "capitalize on" (in Pilger's words), in order to enact long-desired plans.

Anywho this new Mac is getting A LOT of buzz, and we might have found a new HYPE_Man.

Admittedly I've been so blown away by it merely as a DAC/line-stage - the gain is grainless - the dynamics never falter, and as far as inputs and outputs its a swiss army knife

just like my Mytek Stereo-192 DSD DAC - but as a line-stage/DAC (many people, even McIntosh, LOL, call it a pre-amp - but technically a "pre-amp" is a line-stage WITH a phono

pre-amp/phonostage, anyway...) - it KILLS the Mytek to my ears! It brings the music forward as you drive it, but not in an overly aggressive/ear-straining way - and it's just damn

toe-tappingly fun to listen to w/ my ALO Studio Six!!

Just starting to check out the headphone amp section right now!!

My thoughts:

  • The D100 has a very pleasant DAC, which I believe softens the edges a bit (i.e., not analytic). With the HD800 (stock cables), this results in a very pleasant listening experience.
  • I am embarrassed to admit it, but I am actually more impressed by the D100/HD800 combination than by my floor-standing system.
  • Compared to the Nova, the D100 makes the HD800 sound much more full and natural. The Nova, which in my mind iis sufficient to drive the HD800, does result in an occasional track sounding thin.

Cheers,
Tim

Thanks @DICOM!!

I also own a pair of HD800's  - and tried em because of your post right after my Audeze LCD-X and XC's (as they're easier to drive then my 3's obviously).

I loved the combo! Especially w/ this WyWires HD800 cable prototype and the Cardas Clear cables!!

Wonderfully musical, holographic, spot-on imaging and transient attack is lightning fast.

But, most importantly: The soul of the music came through!

Why sir. There is already a McInsloth heaphone thread in full bloom right here on HF. As for paper, you're gonna need all that for the rebadged 2000 buck DT990's with the M logo on em.

Any soft spot I had for hifiman went south long ago. They'd have to be priced at 120 bucks to interest me.

Sure do. Expect the obligatory bowing, grovelling and scraping Appreciation thread to appear anytime now:D

The whole "MeTooism" of any corp that had anything to do with audio jumping in on the headphone market has become so common now it just barely registers anymore.

We need to start a pool for Who's next up in the rush to market Name Brand headphone race.
