My first two weeks of "quality-headphone-use" (Beyer DT250)

It's the Beyer Dynamic DT250 80 ohm again!

Among all these DT250 threads, one more is coming up I'll do short review of them (with my limited knowledge of headphones), and pass on an advice in the end.

I've had these babies for about two weeks now. I started using them right out of the box, and my hopes wasn't fully fulfilled in the beginning. They just didn't sound as good I had aimed for. After a few hours of use, I had them burned in over the night, that made them a whole lot better. After one more night of burn-in they sounded really good, more musical and a bit brighter.

Best thing about them is that they sound good with everything! And they are easily driven. I'll say they're semi-comfortable, as they tend to get a bit tight around yuor ears and at times my ears do get a little warm. I'd still mark them ascomfortable though.

I listen to very bass-heavy music occasionally and these cans handle it, of course you don't have the same feeling with the bass as you get with speakers, and I could imagine that other cans (Beyer 770 maybe?) would give you better bass response. BUT, these cans still got tremendous bass, I havn't heard a single disortion and I've never felt the bass was "missing".

The biggest discovery for me has been how a pair of good headphones can make ambient music sound so much better. I had never listened to ambient in a pair of quality cans before I bought these, and the difference to my speakers is amazing! I shows you a whole other world of the music (which also happens with other kinds of music, but especially ambient in my opinion), you hear so many more details.

The soundstage is a good margin better than average. The music is not directly in front of me, but it's very close Maybe this is as good as sound stage get on closed cans?

About isolation, it's alot better than I expected. You don't hear a thing when the volume is a bit over normal, which is perfect for my use.

Just saw this in another thread about these, and I think it describes them very well. They are not "in your face", but they aren't boring either. Someone else has desribed them as "musical", which I think is very suitable.

These cans simply are the all-around headphone I've searched for, and they were definately the extra bucks worth it (I payed more for these than I intended to pay for a pair of headphones). So I have a headphone that suits my needs very good, but at the same time are a bit more expensive than I'd like, and the question is if I should have spend less money and bought a different pair of headphones which wouldn't have suited my needs this good. I think not, and I see now that I did the right thing, buying an expensive headphone that suited my needs, instead of a less expensive one that would annoy me eventually anyway. And I'll pass this advice on, I'm not saying that you should buy an expensive can no matter what, just make sure the can fits your needs the best instead of your wallet. Put the sound over the money!

doh!

I completely forgot the most important! Thank you Head-Fi!! You guys made me buy these cans, I hope I give a little back by writing this thread

Congrats Mesiaz, I have the 250 ohm version and can say that they are a good pair of headphones, also. You may also want to try the 770 when you get a chance if you like bass.

Thanks a lot for the review Mezias!!
- I really like these "non-professional" reviews because they focus on how much and why the reviewer likes the phones instead of all the - "#db rolloff at #Hz." - nonsense.

Now here is something I would REALLY like...: Some pictures of them!! Do you have a digicam? - on-the-head pictures would be really nice since I can never get an idea of how big these things are!!?

and finally - do you think they have them in stock at musikhuset now so I can go try them?? - This was kind of why I waited for you to get them

The best picture I've found is the one on Jan Meier's site, which you may or may not have seen:

Com on 'Ruda... I mean, like, of COURSE I have seen that one.. Thanks anyway

It's just that everyone who reviews them say they are surprisingly small and on that pic they look BIG.

Also, I generally hate company-product-photos. They always seem to make the product look different than it is because of lighting techniques.

This the only pic of the beyers on a head that i've found:

It kinda sucks. It is on the gernman beyer site (which is by the way way better than .com or .co.uk and it has english language.)

More pics!! You can call me obsessed if you want.... I am

Yeah, that pic makes them look great, doesnt it? When I took them out of the box I was shocked. I expected big puffy pads to stuff my ears inside, instead theres these little flat things with oval holes in the middle that half your ear fits in.. They're definatly not circumaural. Still comfy for most people though, but im having problems with my big head and ears.

Take a look at this pick of the single-sided version of the DT250:

Does it describe the size of the muffs better than the other pic?

Also I would like to know how much better 250s are than my mx400

- Don't get me wrong ... this is a request from all 250 owners not just Mesiaz

I've heard that the stereo imaging on that single-sided version of the DT250 is piss poor.

Really Rick?? Cuz' I've heard they have an exceptional soundstage and that they isolate really really well.

I don't have any pics or a digicam But I was very surprised when I saw them, they don't look like those photos at all That pic of the singlesided can is the one that comes closest really. I don't know if Musikhuset have them in stock, they had to order them home for me (took 2 days), but maybe they ordered a bunch of them?

You'll get serious sound-leakage out through your other ear with the single-sided 250s.

I don't really understand the differences between the DT250-80, the DT250-250, the DT831, and the DT770 -- could someone explain what the deal is with all those Beyer cans? They all seem to blend together to me.
It's all about the way they sound!
250-80 and 250-250 sound similar, but apparently the 250-250 is better (haven't heard it myself)
831 is bright and musical
770 is 'dark' and punchy (lots of low freq)

Only thing to do is go forth and listen, it's like explaining what 'blue' looks like
