Mid Tier DAC for AK100

Hello all!

I would just like to ask for some advice on a small(preferably) DAC that is going to be used with AK100. It's going to be fed through optical, so a optical-in is a must. I absolutely don't need a amp with the DAC. I am happy with my UHA-6S.MKII. Budget is around $200. I been looking at V-DAC MKII, but I'm not sure how much better it will be than AK100's or UHA-6S's DAC.

So couple questions.

1. Is the DAC of $200 device going to be better than AK100's DAC?

2. Are any $200 DAC going to sound better than UHA-6S.MKII's own DAC?(I find UHA-6S's DAC to be on par with AK100's).

I don't mind buying used gear or trading my T PEOS H-200 for a mid tier DAC.

Any rec and help is welcome!

Forgot to mention this. I like neutral sound that is smooth. This DAC will be paired with Leckerton UHA-6S.MKII(best amp for less than $300) and UERM+MDR7550+SRH940.

Just curious if I can get more out of my UERM. Currently I'm using AK100 with UHA6S through optical cable.

Hm. I always thought it was the AK100's amp that was the weak link.

You've most likely done this, but have you tried just the AK's line out to the 6S?

Yeah. The sound is bright. Too bright. UHA-6S and AK100 are both ruler flat, so idk where the brightness comes from.UHA-6S with optical in isn't bright, but neutral.

I wonder if it has something to do with the OI on the LO.

Ah well. I may as well throw in a recommendation. I've been using the HifimeDIY Sabre U2 async DAC. It's the same chip as in the ODAC, Dragonfly, etc, with an async implementation. I've spoken to people who find it as good as the ODAC, which I've been told is dangerously close to the Uber Bitfrost.

For $50, it's worth a shot. Key here though is that it's a PURE dac. It will sound crappy if you plug headphones straight in.

Hmm. Thanks for the rec, but I was looking for a optical DAC for AK100...

Anyways, I think it could be the fact that AK100 doesn't output a full 2vrm line out that is causing trouble. IDK. I'm just guessing.

Actually, just noticed that I had volume boost on AK100 on so with volume set to 75, there's clipping and distortion. Now AK100 with boost off pairs well with UHA-6S.MKII. I guess I won't be getting a mid tier DAC, unless I can get something really good.
