UM3X is better on voices, much warmer than the W4R, which are more polyvalent and transparent. If you like EDM and indie rock, which are very different music style, I would recommand you W4R and perhaps SM64 because of his warm vocals and smooth bass rythmic. What is exactly your spending limit ?

if they need an amp to sound better, doesnt that mean that they need an amp?

the W4r wears many faces, and what i found is it ALL comes down to your equipment you are using with the W4r.  IF you just plan on using the w4r straight out of a ipod then yes it only shows once face. but the w4r is very very capable.

currently, im using a Ibasso db2 dac/iriver ihp-140/sys-concepts Custom Fiber optic cable/Toxic silver poison Ibasso male to RSA male interconnect/ SR-71B amp/Toxic Silver Poison Westone Cable Balanced/Westone w4r

that setup is fully balanced and the sound is phenomenal, lows are impactful, deep, tight, controlled and punchy (which i didnt think the w4r was capable of that)....mids and highs are crystal clear transparent, highs have no roll off whatsoever VERY crisp and clean, almost sharp but not piercing. soundstage is as wide as a akg k701 the w4r almost feel like a open ear FS headphone. everything is pitch black, soundstage imaging is immaculate.

Vocals with that setup give you the impression that the artist is literally feet away from you, sometimes it feels like they are whispering into your ear. really its just insane lol

no that doesnt mean that. i havent came across a single iem that ive used that didnt have something more to bring to the table amped.

you CAN listen to the W4r straight out of a ipod, but its like driving a ferrari the speed limit, amped would be like driving the ferrari full throttle. like i said the w4r are very capable universal iem.

if you just judge them out of a ipod or phone, you are loosing out on their true potential.

that is usually because of the DAC inside other devices being better, some IEMs need amping and some do not

+1 for W4R and despite fit issues, the TF10 is a great-sounding IEM that can sound even better with a hybrid or SPC upgrade cable.

By the way, I have been listening to quite a bit of edm and rock via my iPhone 4S with curyamp app. I have found the fitear parterre to be quite enjoyable, it also has a removable cable

Cosmic Ears does a TF10 custom reshell, with or without dynamic driver upgrade, for a reasonable price. Great customer service too.

I totaly agree with you that's why I own HDP-R10 and RSA The Protector previously. As all IEM/OEM source play an important role, but that's not all ;)
