The Sad State Of The So Called Audiophile DAP Market - Page 83

Well... some of those are "user" thingies... :p

Can somebody explain how to fix it: when I transfer my alac files from my mac to X5, double files are created for every track with begin with _ sign. They are 0 bytes but effecting gap less playback. Can I fix it myself or need to be fixed by Fiio as a bug?

This has been talked about before. There's an app that actually removes all of those files easily and it seems that since FiiO is aware of lots of Mac users, they will actually do something about it.

One crash happened when changing between prev/next/prev songs... changing to the previous song was delayed, so I think I hit it again, then it was playing the wrong song so I went forward again and it crashed.

Never experienced ANY crashes with the "tour" unit. Bear in mind that it had an earlier firmware...

is it me or or is the equalizer not work with high res files?

EQ works with 44.1Khz/16Bits and 44.1Khz/24 Bits

EQ does not work with 88.2Khz/24 bits or 96Khz/24 Bits

I am using X5, FW 2.0

Already being worked I think... anyway, using EQ on that unit... meh!

I would love if when in USB DAC mode you could just turn the wheel to turn the volume up/down, even if the screen is off. Kind of annoying to press the power button, press the volume buttons and then use the wheel (not necessary but easier than the buttons to me)

I think this is users fault... I remember that if you kept the middle button pressed, the volume showed up on screen and you could use the scroll to lower it... no need to press power, press volume and then use the wheel...

Also getting very slow playback on DAC mode... sometimes it is finicky when switching between Storage and DAC, so I have to switch back and forth and unplug and replug the wire back in to get it to work.. this time it's playing my songs back at like half the speed or slower (I've also had it play back at 200% speed before). Restarting fixes it, though.

FW 2.0

Did not experience this... again, older firmware.

the volume buttons do work, but you just can't hold them down, you have to push them in one step at a time (*click* *click* *click* *click* *click* *click* *click* *click* *click* *click* *click* *click* *click* *click*)

Used the buttons a few times, but using the wheel is the best method, again, probably user "error"...

I just had a lockup on my X5, while playing a tune I went into the settings to change the screen timeout and it could not be selected. When I tried to go back to the tune nothing would happen and the X5 was frozen.

Never tried that, so not sure... but again, the unit never froze on me.

Anyone else having tracks skip while listening to the X5 under FW 2.0? I have gotten it a few times now, rather annoying, luckily turning it off and back on has fixed it each time so far.

Did not experience this.

I had that happen to me(skip/lag/distort - I don't know how exactly to explain it)

Did not experience this.

The rubber closure of the 2nd TF card slot just broke off, is this easily replacable?

One of the cons in most reviews...

After a few days of playing around, I'm not confident that I want to keep my X5.  It does a lot of things well, but it also has some serious quirks that make it somewhat frustrating to work with for me.

Personal feeling...

As it is now, every file on every album is alphabetical :(

I am having real difficulty getting the player to recognize my .dff and .dsf files.  I've tried re extracting them from .iso to ensure they are not compressed, but no luck.  I'm not sure what to try next.

I'm bugged by the operation of the volume rocker, and the reliance on a "duration of press" method of control, which I don't personally favor.

I'm also running into a lot of inconsistency with album art and lyrics.  I have these things attached to all my files, and they all display properly in JRiver.  However, when transferring them over (even when embedding album art into the files) it's hit and miss.  Some albums work, and some don't.  I don't even really need album art, but the inconsistency is maddening.

I'm a little bugged by the feel of the click wheel, specifically how it rocks in its housing, and how sensitive it seems to be to small movements.  I have a devil of a time choosing the right icon.

Yeah, had the inconsistency with album art and I'm not a fan of the wheel's built either... never tried .dff, .dsf... I think they were not supported at the time of the tour (nor OTG)

I just updated the firmware to 2.0.

I try to install the USB DAC driver but the installer can't detect my device. I'm using Windows 7 Professional 64-bit, fully updated.

Probably user error... I used the unit on Windows 8 and Windows 7 machines, no problems (again, older firmware)

Now, am I saying that the X5 is the best evaaaa?!?! Errmm.. No. Not yet at least but of the ones I've tried lately, it performed well enough.

Still rocking the AK100 MK2 until they fix the "file management" issues then I'll probably try it again...

I remember Sean, he's a mod on here and lives in Japan, owned a AK120 and sold it after he had a chance to hear the ZX1. To my knowledge he's quite happy with his choice of switching DAP's. Considering I'm a Sony fan boy from back in the day I sometimes can't help but wonder about the ZX1 myself. I trust Sean's ears, he's more seasoned in the mobile hi fi industry then I am and we both seem to hear the same.

The ZX1's 15mw per channel into 16-Ohm is equivalent to a Sansa Clip+ in terms of power.  Break out your efficient IEMs for the ZX1.

This is a response I got from Jack Fu regarding the "Master DAP" on 1/28/2013

hi, Zachary

Master is defined as the highest grade DAP in the market. so, every thing will be the top grade. including the price. it must higher than USD 1000 and above. But it is not finally released, so, there  is no more informations for it. sorrry
Please keep an eye on it.

Its already been more than a year since this email and still absolutely no info on this DAP.
I hope he didn't give up on it, more competition the better.

Last I contacted Jack (about 2 months ago) there was no talk about 'Master' any longer. Actually, when I brought up the word there were no further replies from him at all. :p I'd originally asked when the new Master product was coming or any insight about its progress only instead was told Hisound are (were?) working on a decoder and amplifier for smartphones which was going to be named something along the lines of Smartfi. It seemed they'd given up on the idea of audiophile DAP and focusing where the most profit is. Only... (IMO)

I still have my three Hisound players, they're wonderful pieces of gear, however my hopes for any dedicated DAPs from them in the future are quite slim, especially with the flooding of FiiO and iBasso DAPs both with superior UI. Deep down I feel Hisound know they cannot compete with these players user interfaces and have thrown in the towel. (IMO) By all means, anyone is welcome to contact him about this and tell me I'm wrong. I'm more than happy to be told otherwise as I enjoy all my Hisound players.

Here's hoping HiSound is taking its time to release the product because they want to release a complete product, user experience and all, into the market.

EDIT

Looks like H2O has the inside scoop. To bad, I liked the house sound for HiSounds DAPs.

Went to Jaben today to do a little "scouting", and was astounded by what an iPC into the Sony PHA-1 could achieve (with the right cans). If you don't need HD, this could be the way to go!

...the right cans being practically any Grados or the HD600s (yes, with only 26mW or so at 300 Ohms).

Sadly, it won't drive the DT250/250s properly.

the sad state of high end DAP is sad because money is not enough, AK240 sounds like perfect solution but only until you look at its price. Ibasso broke mu faith with DX50 because what's the point of making a great DAP and then let it down with poor amp section? Cowon actually sounds like interesting alternative and M is intriguing, but if none fits me then i might start saving for ak240 wink.gif

Hi DF,  I hope you get a chance to audition the DX90 and tell us if it's better than X5 in terms of SQ, and how it compares to your AK

Cheers

What warrants AK240's pricing?  I personally think it's audiophile pricing unfortunately.  This thing is, the audiohile market is niche so they don't have high margins, but still it's rediculous how high the pricing is.  If we keep buying these overpriced players, it's going to keep going up in price to draw customers that it is high end with higher pricing.  Higher pricing gives audiophile the perception of quality, unfortunately, and there are quite a number of people just take the plung based on price alone.  I hope we can keep the prices at reasonble levels as there are more reasonable options out there.  The hifi DAP market is getting more competitive, but it's not helping the prices.
