And the absence of a touch screen.

Yeah, and it's not that I don't think my setup sounds good, it definitely sounds great (compared to what I was listening to.. crap not even worth mentioning here) - I am just now very interested in increasing quality more and more. I do really like the UI of an iPod, that's for sure... but I will sacrifice that for better sound.

So you guys think the money should be spent on better headphones or a better DAP?

iPod + E12 + Beyerdynamic DT770's 250ohm - I did just get the headphones, though and was leaning toward a DAP, but now am unsure!

I just got new music in house. It is some very exciting stuff from Roger Waters. His solo Albums and his classical opera Ca Ira about the French Revolution.

Ipod Classic > ALAC > LOD > Meier Stepdance > Ultrasone Signature Pro.

:o2smile:

This is a very good sound I have here. Not only because the rig is fantastic, even more because this music is so for me. And I am in the hunt for great sound since 1974, that is when I got my first stereo set. My first headphone was in 1975, lol

So if your rig gets boring, find new music, or rediscover old music.

:beerchug:

It's the music........

Not sure if you mean me, but I am nowhere near sick or bored with my music! Just hunting for the best sound I can afford :)

Personally there is so much better to be had than even an amped ipod. Yes it has a great UI and build quality is good. In terms of sound for me it leaves a lot to be desired.

Yes thank you for that - that is why I am in the market for a better DAP. I do hear very very mixed things about iPods, though!

Anyway.. I think I'm about 90% sure I'm gonna go with an X5 when it's out.. then I will have the X5 and E12 bundle with DT770s @ 250ohm, I'm pretty excited to hear that setup!

Reminds me of a co-worker who buys a new, fully-loaded truck every two years - never paying off anything - always injecting more cash with his trade-ins. He recently paid over $3000 above the dealer-negotiated price to have his latest acquisition completely re-fitted with the factory leather package.  The truck had come with everything else he wanted except for leather and he wasn't going to let that stop him. When I asked him why he likes leather seats so much, he answered: "Fabric just doesn't last as long as leather does!"

Doh!

I live in Austin, and will take fabric over leather any time.  110 in the summer certainly does happen here, and I find fabric far more comfortable when it happens.

Well here's some interesting news, the Rockbox team have begun to port over Rockbox onto the DX50. They have early release out already and early reports seem to be its a decent user experience. i'm gonna keep an eye on this and wait for a fully stable Rockbox port. Who knows, maybe the Rockbox team can save the DX50 for me.

The DX50 unit I'm borrowing is still happening, it was sent a little late. Hopefully early next week. ;)

Do update it to v1.2.8. I think it's the best but some others still prefer v1.2.2. There have been modded firmwares with v1.2.2 sound but 1.2.8 interface which is a lot smoother. Apparently there is even Rockbox lolol :D

Indeed, Sir Lin, indeed I will.

Your videos are always long, but you bring up a lot of good points, which I like. I definitely agree with your thoughts.

One huge problem I have with the campaign is not only paying more for HD music, but the master of the music. So far, Neil has been campaigning for 24/96+ HD resolutions, he's been doing this for a while now actually, and that will not solve the problem of having compressed music. HD music offers no benefits to the end user.

Example 1:
A year ago I purchased Michael Jackson's "Bad" album from an HD music website. Me being an average consumer (the demographics the Pono player is targeting), I didn't know any better and I bought the thing thinking it must be better. After all, HD music offers 92831469817345 times the resolution of a CD!

That, was a big mistake. Screenshots of analyzing one of the tracks in the album (Click to show)

Example 2:
Something more recent actually.

The second problem I have with the campaign so far is the lack of details and the non-subtle marketing. There are very minimal details about the device so far. We basically only know about the DAC, battery life, media it can play, it has a touchscreen, and it has a line out. I don't mean to bash any of the artists, but watching that campaign video was kind of painful to watch. I'm pretty certain there's a personality thing going on between the huge artists in the industry. Everyone in the video basically says it's the best thing they've heard and they're all walking out of their car. You're working with Neil Young for Pete's sake; he's a huge figure in the music industry. No artist in their right mind would go up to such a person and say "no, this sounds bad." It's like Dr. Dre offering Snoop Dogg a chance to be a part of his marketing campaign for his latest product; of course Snoop Dogg is going to say it's the best thing ever.

Iono, this is way off topic now. Don't mind me, carry on. >.>
