If you had a pair of QC 15s would you buy a pair of HD 558s?

This is my situation right now, I got the Bose as a gift a few months back but they leave something to desired in terms of sound quality. Would you buy a second pair as your quality headphones?

Also what are good headphones in the price range of the HD 558s? I have to say I quite like the sound of them. I'm not a basshead at all, would much rather have crisp and accurate sound.

Heya,

Sure, I'd definitely get an open air set of headphones for normal listening. I'd reserve the closed noise-canceling ones for situations where you need the isolation and privacy, such as when in public, in transit, or in a house full of noisy cohabitants.

In that range, I'd be looking towards:

AudioTechnica AD900X

Beyer DT880

Sony MA900

Hifiman HE-300

AKG K240 MKII or K702/Q701

Very best,

I use the 558s and am very pleased with them. They are extremely comfortable and sound great so long as you aren't a basshead. I like the space and sound of the open headphones. There is a "foam mod" that some say makes these sound similar to the more expensive 598s. I have done the mod, which opens up the soundstage a bit, but I haven't heard the 598s to compare. I got these for $105 refurb from Amazon. I amp them, but they work well without.

As has been said, the Bose QCs apparently do a good job of noise cancellation on aircraft etc.

I think usually you can get a HD558 for around $130-$150 on Amazon which makes them a pretty decent headphone at that price. One thing to understand is that the HD558 is a fairly balanced and neutral headphone, doesn't do anything bad and doesn't excel particularly at anything either.

If you can scout for a Sony MA900 for under $190, then I'd suggest you go for it instead. It's everything the HD558 is but with a rather significant bump across the entire range, making the MA900 a desire that the HD558 doesn't quite touch.
