Ran across this thread quite by accident and am glad I did. Thank you for posting!
I got an iphone 5s yesterday from Best Buy and was going to pick up some cheaper (i.e. not ridiculously marked up) charging cables online. I'll have to dig into this a little further. If it is true that ios 7 blocks non-Apple Lightning chargers, I believe this is an attempt for Apple and their retail & manufacturing partners to make even more money. Why did I not buy a protective film at Best Buy for $25? Because I can get three of them online for $7. I'd be curious if Best Buy gets a kickback from phone/plan sales or if they just sell the phones solely to get the foot traffic for accessories. The BB associate made sure to remind me twice that the iPhone 5 used a different charger than the pre-iPhone 5 phones and kindly asked if I needed a new cable or car charger. Hrmm.....
