New HE-500 lover seeking for new amp

Hello everyone,

just joined this great community, even if I've been lurking for a long time.

I'm a STAX 507 user, and now I jumped also in the HiFiman HE-500 bandwagon (I've not dismissed the STAX of course, just added the ortho).

I usually listen to small group acoustic jazz, guitar recitals and some classical music (mostly Wagner and Mahler), but sometimes I like also to have fun with some non-hard rock (i.e. Pink Floyd) and some prog.

I love the sound of the STAX, very clear and detailed, with tons of transparency and micro-dynamics, but I'm fully aware of the limits in the lower freqs and the headstage.

I also love the sound of the HE-500, even if right now I'm amplifying them with a very limited amplification (a FiiO X3). I think that the HE-500 loose something in terms of transparency but gain a lot in term of headstage and bass impact wrt the 507. All in all, even with this limited amplification, I like the HE-500 a little bit more than the STAX for more "energetic" music, while with "critical" recordings (e.g. piano solo, guitar recital) i still prefer the 507.

I've listened a couple of times the HE-500 with the Auralic Taurus MKII, and I have found the sound absolutely incredible, almost perfect. But I 'm in no way an expert, rather I have very limited experience with the ortho world, so maybe there is something better.

Now, for all of you experts here, what would be the best amp for the HE-500, given that:

- I like a detailed, transparent and very dynamic sound

- I like a neutral, very tonally correct reproduction

- I absolutely don't like harsh or fatiguing highs

A couple more hints:

- I live in EU, and in my country importing an amp from outside EU is VERY costly (up to +50% on the price of the amp+shipment)

- I would like the amp to be able to drive also a possible, future, HE-6

My current setup:

- sources : Marantz SA11-S1 , Auralic Vega , M2Tech Young

- pre : Spectral 30SL G2 , Aesthetix Calypso

- pwr : Pass X150.5

- ldspk : Amphion Xenon II

many thanks

mike

Heya,

If you want something to drive the HE-6, don't even look at the general pool of "headphone" amps. Treat the HE-6 like you would treat speakers when it comes to an amplifier. The HE-6 and HE-4 are in another world of inefficiency compared to the HE-500. The HE-500 can literally run from a portable device, even though it's not efficient, it's efficient enough to listen to from lower powered sources. But the HE-6 can hardly be run by even a powerful headphone amp (1watt at 38ohms? Nope. Not even close). If you want a headphone amp that can run the HE-6 with over head, you're going to need to find something that pushes 6~8 watts at 38ohms, and higher, which is hard to find in the headphone world since that's already speaker territory in terms of output. We're talking 50~80 watts at 8ohm speaker amps to compare.

If you want something powerful enough to handle the HE-6 (and really it's only the HE-6, there's no point getting the HE-4 if you have the HE-500, and there is no other more inefficient ortho than the HE-6 right now), then I would look to Audio GD.

I would look to the NFB 10-ES2. Excellent device. Fully balanced. Enough output to push the HE-6.

It's either something like that, or start looking at speaker amps.

Personally I use a speaker amp with my HE-500.

Very best,

thanks for the feedbacks.

so basically, you're suggesting to get the best ampli for the HE-500 I can get my hands on, and drive the HE-6 with the Pass, am I correct?

btw, this would save me some bucks, which is always a good thing....

I've listened to some AudioGD ampli, not at all my liking (I'm not saying they are bad, just do not fit exactly my taste, IMHO a little bit too dark and "lush"), is the 10-ES2 different from the AudioGD home-sound ??

I don't consider Audio gd Master 8 (or even NFB-6) "lush", but even so you could perhaps check Audio gd Precision 1 for both HE500 & HE-6.

I'll try to give the Precision a listen, thanks for the suggestion
