Sound quality comparison

I'd love some opinions/answers on something I've been thinking about. First of all, I've seen many people saying that the Sennheiser HD 598 sound quality is very close to both HD 558 and HD 518. I've also seen/heard (and forgive me if it appears a random train of thought) some people claiming that the HD 598 was far superior (taking only sound quality into consideration) to Bose QuietComfort 15. So, how fair is it to say that the HD 518 (~$100) has as good sound as QuietComfort 15 (~$270)?

I actually think the general consensus is that the HD558 is closer to the HD598 than the HD518.

I was under the impression that the HD518 wasn't very different also (I had read this and this). I asked this question, specifically, because my brother has a QuietComfort 15 and, despite the Bose hate, I thought it sounded good (though I wouldn't know for sure how good it is, I'm a noob). Headphones in my country are incredibly overpriced, though, and I'm looking to buy one I can afford and sounds good to me; HD558's are hard to find here.

So, if the question was HD558 instead, or even as it is worded now, what would you think?

Hello!

Not sure about the Bose but hey! To my ears, the Sennheiser HD518 and HD598 sound very different! The HD518 have more bass(mid-bass), more muddy sounding. The HD598 have much better clarity and the mid bass are better. Mids are more forward as well?

My best guess and 2 cents.

The HD518, HD558 & HD598 use the same driver, but the cups are different.

I believe the HD518 is the least open, causing a more bassy like sound, where as the HD598s are the most open, better for sound stage, mids and treble.

The HD558 would fall somewhere in the mid.

With the Bose QC15 you are mostly paying for the active noise cancellation, which is considered to be the best in the world. But in audio quality alone, the Sennheiser is better.

That was exactly what I was wondering, nice to know.
