AudioPhiles Guide to a Low Cost of Living

We all know that as AudioPhiles new gear cost... well a lot.

 

So I figured we ought to make a nice little guide/thread where we can share all of our cost saving ideas! 

 

From DIY Headphone stands, to SUPER inexpensive meals, anything is welcome here that can help all of us, live life a little more inexpensivly so we have more funds for more headphones ;3

 

Going to start with an AudioPhile Stable food... the Moddified Ramen Noodle! 

 

Ingrediants

4 Bags Instant Ramen

8oz Frozen Peas

1/4 Onion

6 Eggs 

 

Pretty simple really, add your Frozen Peas, then your Onions, then your ramen then your eggs, cook it all in one pot and enjoy :D

 

Again we should try to make it fun with pictures, and anything is welcome. If you can jerry rig it and save a penny, let us know! As we all need a low cost of living [so we an afford them headphones]

To continue from where we left off, you can also fry a big egg-pancake (just eggs, but you can also season with soya sauce) and then cut it into long 1cm wide strips and add to the soup after. 

Miso isn't exactly cheap, but if you use it sparingly just to thicken the flavour, it can go a long way. Makes a more authentic ramen too. 

 

I don't know about prices where you are, but often spring-onion goes for quite cheap here. So I just buy a few bunches, chop them up and freeze them. Then every time I make ramen, I grab a small handful and chuck it in the bowl. Don't defrost them or add them to the boil. Just pour the finished soup over them straight out of the freezer, and they're perfect. Anything more than that and they're too soft.

Good point as well, I also make my own curry. Takes a long time but it's dirt cheap and tastes great. Not to mention it scares away my roomies for a week or so!

Are we boiling the eggs or is this egg drop soup-ish? Personally, I fry it sunnyside and lay it on top.

Slightly more expensive (or less expensive if you think cost of your life) only use half the soup package and sub in some soy sauce instead. Taste better and better for you! biggrin.gif

Another long running favourite of mine is tomato soup.

(serves two)

- 2 small cartons of puréed tomatoes (not concentrated)

- 1 small pot of créme fraíche or cream

- 1 small clove of garlic, chopped, mashed, or the dried 'garlic salt' whatever.

- add at your preference: oregano, basil, thyme, salt and sugar

- also if you like a cube of chicken stock (or variants)

Another good idea, I've topped with a sunnyside egg before as well!  And yea I got a littlle Golden Maoutian sauce my self I spalsh in my ramen along with some Siraccha 

 
nice one the tomatoe soup as well.

One of my favorite quick and easy recipes is what I've been calling "almost Udon"

 

Safeway consistently stock Udon noodles, cerano peppers, and cilantro for really cheap. 


Make some broth by boiling some water with chicken bouillon and soy sauce, and when it comes to a boil, add one package of noodles. When cooked, whisk an egg (I typically add some chopped garlic, too) and pour it into the soup. Stir it around, add cilantro and chopped cerano pepper, and hey presto: You've got a meal.

Ok here is my contribution to the subject:

 

One of the most cost efficient and versatile food is pasta. Within 15 min. you can pull a nice meal together.

My lunch plans for today is this spaghetti:

 

100-150g spaghetti

Chopped chili

Crushed garlic

1 diced tomato

Knob of butter

Olive oil

Whatever cheese I find in the fridge (the best is parmesan)

 

While the pasta is cooking quickly fry the chili and the garlic in the oil. Add the diced tomatoes and turn off the heat (don’t cook the tomatoes, just warm it). Add the spaghetti, a knob of butter to the pan and mix it together. If you have some fresh spices like basil, thyme, rosemary or even parsley add it at the end. Top it with cheese. Put the money that you saved in the headphone jar.

 

Enjoy.

 

You can boost this up with basically everything: leftover meat, bacon bits, sausage, canned meats, more chili…

Intravenously consumed blendered flatbread. It's the obvious economical choice.

 

Barring that, we cook up our leather earpads and hope to the great Sennheiser gods that they've still retained some of the juicy bovine nutrients.

 

To be serious, mixed cold noodles in a pinch, with miso. Easy to fix, vibrant in taste, you can vary the ingredients to change it up when needed. Buy in bulk, and for $50 you're pretty much set for a month.

This is probably heavily dependant on global location. But it's true - uni students get lots of benefits almost everywhere.

... there are a number of resturants that have discounts for students, 

 

and this is a LOW COST thread not a free thread -.-
