Best headphones under $100 (basshead?)

Thread Starter

Hey all, I've been browsing these forums for quite some time and I know there's been a heap of these threads, but I haven't exactly found what I've been looking for yet. (This is my first thread :D)

So if you haven't guessed already, I need some advice on selecting some over-ear headphones! I owned a pair of Panasonic HTF600-S with velour pads which were being recommended and praised a lot on these forums, and were known for having "powerful bass without disrupting the high frequencies". I was pleased with the headphones but always felt like it was lacking presence. I had also tried a friend's Beyerdynamic DT770 headphones and I couldn't listen for it very long because the lack of presence just frustrated me.

I'm after headphones with a lot more presence and bass (like listening to the thumping, booming bass sounds when watching a Die Hard movie in the cinema). I listen to music from progressive metal, vocals + acoustic and orchestral, and every time I had listened to something with my Panasonics, it felt like something was missing. I want a set of headphones that are preferably (because I know I can't have everything for under $100) portable, comfortable and carry a sound that really punches you.

Would really appreciate any help all you audiophiles could offer.

Cheers!
