Listen to mostly Flacs, but also some hires and DSD (Yes albums). Use iBasso DX90 and Fiio X5. Varied music, recently, Rush, Crowded House, Gary Moore, latest Foo Fighters, Dream Theatre, Bruckner, Dr Feelgood, latest Floyd.

How does the P7 pair with your DX90?  Do you feel a need for further amplification?  What gain setting are you using with the P7?  Really interested to pick up either the P5 S2 or the P7's.

I don't have a DX90 (unfortunately), but I'm just listening to the P7s now and am being reminded how relatively well these headphones perform right out the headphone socket of a phone or tablet. Likewise I've also used them with good results directly from an imac.

That's not to say they don't scale well and improve with additional amplification and a better source. I've found they improve nicely with my fostex portable dac/amp, a PA2V2 or. Schiit Asgard 2 - so yes in some ways, unless you feed them well you will not be hearing their *full* potential.

If I was going to criticise the P7s for anything, to my ears there is a slight harshness in the mids that is softened by a amp that is slightly warm. One of the nice/awkward things about the P7s is that they are somewhere between a portable/home headphone and can do well in either setting.

However, given their target audience and strong presence in Apple stores I have a feeling they were designed and tuned specifically to work well directly from mobile devices. Furthermore, I would guess the dx90 would offer a significant improvement over my old iPod classic.

Personally I don't think of an extra amp as being a necessity with these and if all I'm taking out for the day is an iPad these will be the first headphones I grab.

Regards

Jeb.

Can anyone confirm if the jack within the P7 earcup is the same size/shape as within the P5 S2? Looking for an aftermarket cable for my S2 and Double Helix have one for the P7. Thanks!

Poor quality photo - difficult to hold two pairs and a phone! Hope you can see the P5 cable channel is much shorter.

Really appreciate you taking the photo, thanks for that. Guess that rules that one out, unless Double Helix can adapt the cable for the S2.

Sad news folks. Returning my P7s tomorrow. Really love how they sound but they're not practical for how I want to use them. It rains so much here and they're not capable of dealing with that.

Will consider getting them again if I change how I listen to music at home.

I don't have a DX90 so apologies if I'm jumping the gun. Anyway, the P7 really doesn't need much power. About 20% volume on my laptop is as loud as I can listen to for more than a few minutes. You don't need to worry about gain or further amplification in any context. That's not to say that they don't scale up with quality amplification (they do), but quality has nothing to do with power.

Dx90 should be quite good. I'm using them on my ak240 and it honestly doesn't need anything else. So far as cans go, P7 strikes the best balance between portable and great sounding without going over budget and weight.

Sorry been away a week. Low gain, no amp needed. P5 sounds warmer and less detailed from comments, I hated the first version, thought it was faulty although looks very nice! P7 more attacking and exciting and matches well with open airy DX90 ... imo!
