PSB Image 7PT vs. ...?

Thread Starter
I'm about to jump in and buy some PSB Image 7PT speakers. I can get them for 850, new A-stock. Does anyone know of any comparable deals. Could I possibly get better speakers for that price, or even lower?

Thanks,
Ryan Lundin

gear: Philips 963SA and cheapo Onkyo receiver (for now).

My experience with the PSB Image series, which all use the same drivers and similar crossovers, I have to conclude that they either need a really really nice amp to sound good (I'm assuming, I haven't heard them on one,) or they end up sounding flat in the midrange. I would be wary of pairing them to your onkyo before hearing them first.

Since you're looking at the pt series, I'm betting you want some serious bass. The maggie mmg's are brand new $500. You could add a diy sub to that (or some other sub option) and still come out around your ballpark price, but it'll have to be a pretty good sub to match the mmg's. The Dayton kit sub is supposed to have pretty good speed. Or maybe you may decide that you don't need a sub.

I think this is one of the very "best" loudspeakers I have ever heard. I use a pair with a 3.5 watt SET amp and love them. I have owned many, many speakers, most of them far more expensive than the 7PTs and keep coming back to them. These are a killer deal at that price and I doubt you'll better for this qulity of sound reproduction. there are some prettier speakers out there but none that have the price/performance ratio of the PSBs. If you like super deep, very tight bass you'll love these speakers. The midrange is also really nice without being too forward and the treble detail and extension is excellent. It's true that you won't get the very best from these speakers without a good amp to drive them, but they will certainly grow with you as you upgrade.

Given what we know of tuberoller's ears, I guess it's true that they need really good amplification. I heard the Image 2b on 2 vintage NAD integrateds, a Macintosh (don't know the model) and an Onkyo receiver. Didn't impress. I suppose the MMG's won't either, on your Onkyo . So it's your call. Either way, plan on upgrading your amp soon.

If I recall, Magnepan designs their cheaper models for receivers, however. That is ironic, considering Mylar diaphram speakers are very accurate (correct?).

oo...I do not mean to thread-jack, but I take it you like the MMGs? Have you heard the new $300 W model?

No, I haven't, but I mean to, someday. I'd like to see how they compare to the dynamics in the price range and how they respond to cheap amplification.

If you check PSB website they are tweaking the Image line, they have photo posted of new line-up .......same shape/configuration but different finishes and also heard the drivers/crossovers are tweaked. Also notice they will no longer offer a 7T model, probably figure best to get 6T and PSB sub instead.
Not sure when new models are available.

PSB

As new line becomes available should be good prices to close out old models, PSB is easy to find at 25% discount if you search the web a bit.

Hey Tuberoller,
I was using a pair of 4ts with my Arcam Alpha 5 integrated. Sounded Awesome! Then bought a pair of 7PTs.....I was thrilled.
Got home only to find my amp (40wpc) doesn't have enough juice for these monsters.
They sounded like a transistor radio.
Emailed/called PSB. The guy read me a bedtime story from an owners manual!!!
Now I see your posting.
You know what's up....what kinda amp and power/current do I need?
Thanks much
