I don't understand why Hifiman are spreading themselves thin with more half-baked products while they don't seem to be able to sort out their flagship player.

They are so close to perfection with the HM-901 it is even more annoying.

I think what happen was that 802 was one of the dozen blueprint of their next flagship dap and somewhere down the line they decided to go to some other direction (hence the delay of hm901). Perhaps they just worked too much on the 802 that they simply did not want to let it go wasted.

the more the merrier all and all who cares, the more the merrier but than again you are right get your flagship to the level that its price tag suggest before focusing your energy on making more dollars.

If i didnt buy 901, i would jump on 802 immediately... Now i am more interested in 700... Will 700 supports digital and line out? I emailed hifiman to inquire about when it will appear on head direct...

I agree the HM802 could be one of the alternative in the development of HM901, but I don't think ES9018 was ever the mid-point change / afterthought. While the release of HM901 is delayed till recently in the West, don't forget it is already sold in China almost a year before that and the use of ES9018 is pretty much another year before, back when the HM901 was first announced.

There is only a headphone socket and a USB port on the case, so the answer is 99.95% no.

No. I don't think they even recommend the use of other headphones beside RE400 and RE600.

Will the use of wolfson make the sound warmer???and since it's the successor of 801.  If thats the case, I'm very interested

I for one am eager to read about the comparison between HM-802 vs the Sony NWZ-ZX1 since the two seems that they will occupy the same price range.  If the HM-802 is based on the HM-901 chassis, the Sony has my vote on looks alone.

Wolfson tends to be fairly flavourless. It is really the buffer stage that will affect the sound most.

Hifiman replied that there is no confirmed release date for 700 and that it only made its first appearance in Tianjin, China yeterday.

I just think that the compact balance portable DAP has its appeal and the price is not expensive (or maybe I am Chinese..)... I have enough cables and adapters to convert to trrs if needs be.... My only worry is that when I read the 601 thread, it said it performed badly when playing high res files... I hope it will not be the case for 700...

The 60x series has old school 16bit R-2R DAC chips and shouldn't be able to play 24bit files at all. The chips in the new HiFiMan DAP series are Sigma-Delta chips and will most likely have no problems playing hi res files.

the 700 is quite possibly the ugliest thing I have ever seen.  Whats with the orange bar in the middle?  does it even serve a purpose?

Actually that is where you put the AAA battery.

I dont mind if DAPs are on the ugly side but whoever designed this should maybe rethink his career choice.
