E17 - have I wasted my cash?

I purchased the E17 alpen from Amazon, along with an otg cable (still in transit) that I intended to use to hook the fiio up to my Galaxy S3 and DT1350's

I  became aware whilst the fiio was in transit that there are issues with using the s3 and e17 together - one of these seemingly being that you cannot use its DAC function (only its amp function)  in conjunction with the S3.

The other issue I have come across  online is that, in the rare cases where the DAC has worked with the S3, it is not compatible with the Spotify app, which is kind of dissapointing.

I suppose my first question is would you consider it worthwhile keeping the E17 to be used as a standalone amp (plugged in at both ends using the 3.5 headphone jack shaped things) with the S3, or would something else do the trick just as well/better and be compatible with Spotify also? I suppose that the answer to this depends largely on what difference DAC (or its absence) makes.

My second question would be what are the chances (if any) of the s3 and and fiio being compatible when the otg arrives?

All the best,

I'm guessing it would have been better just to get the $60 Fiio E11 (amplifier only) for use with the Galaxy S3.

The Fiio E17 would be good to have as you can use it's DAC feature with a computer (PC or Mac).

Does your S3 run Android 4.1?  If so, have you seen this thread, and in particular this post (#2591)?  The E07k isn't quite as nice as the E17, but may be an option?

Not sure about the Spotify part of your question, but why would its audio out be any different than other player apps on the Android, assuming you found a DAC that would work with USB OTG on the S3 at all?

E17 does not work with S3 naively as a DAC even with an USB OTG cable (don't know about other aftermarket kernels), the E7/E07k does work with the s3, however.

As just an amp, for the S3, I don't think the E17 is worth it IMO, there are plenty of other AMPs that would do a phenomenal job.

HOWEVER, the e17 is very versatile and if you were to use the e17 for other purpose (eg DAC/Amp for your computer), I say it's a worth while purchase as the benefit-to-cost ratio is very high with the e17.

Thanks for the advice guys.

As it happens I ordered an EO7 as well, cancelled the order, but it has arrived nonetheless. When the otg cable arrives I can test that out, too.

I think my decision now will hinge on whether or not the EO7 sounds better coupled with the S3 as a DAC and amp than the E17 does as just an amp.

This being said, I have been using the E17 as a DAC/ Amp tonight with my laptop, and there is definitely a difference a positive difference in the sound.
