Amp/Dac or Xonar Essence STX?

Alright well, I am going to order a DT990 this thursday (payday), I am looking to get surround sound on the headphones (apperently capable with these from other topics) I would love to use these portable too. would the Xonar essence be a good choice for powering these without an additional amp?

also is the Fiio E17 sufficient to power these for portability?

From the best of my knowledge, the Fiio E17 has no problems with driving 250-Ohm Beyerdynamic headphones.

To save some cash, you could get a cheaper (Xonar) sound card, $30-$65, and connect the E17's optical input with a sound card's optical output.

This way you get the sound card's Headphone Surround Sound features while using the E17's DAC and headphone amplifier.

I'm going to guess the Fiio E17 can provide loud enough sound with the DT990, with the E17's volume setting at around 50%

Heya,

The E17 powers the 250ohm Beyer just fine.

PurpleAngel described a good way to get the most from your E17 and DT990 if you want surround for gaming. A simple Xonar DG or higher card with optical out can do that.

Alternatively, I would nab a SoundBlaster Zx.

Very best,
