xonar phoebus

Hey guys what up,

I have got a xonar phoebus, and I was looking to upgrade to the HD 600's (from ath m50's)

But i was wondering if my soundcard is able to drive the 600's

The xonar says he can drive up to 600 Ohm, do i NEED an external amp?

Or will the xonar be able to handle these?

A cheap $100 amp like magni or bravo ocean will blow away your hd 600. A $100 amp with a hd 598 will give tough competition to a hd 600 out of a stx level sound card. I am not sure your sound card even has a headphone amp but even if it does, it is unlikely to be better than asus stx which isn't as good as a $100 dedicated amp.

Thank you for your reply,

I think the phoebus is pretty much the same as the STX, just looks/sounds a little bit different.

So you dont think it will be the best choice to go with the HD600 without adding an external amp?

No. It isn't. It isn't good enough even with HD 598. At least not as good as an external amp. Leave alone for full measure.

Thank you, i know what to stay away from than :D

Ill probably stick to lower ohm closed headsets, they might not sound that good but price/quality wise it isnt half bad.

A hd 600 will still outperform headsets with an asus stx, but a better amp will help a lot.

Get a hd 598 with magni.

The Phoebus will drive the 598's easily. I don't see the need of an external headphone amp. The real problem with that soundcard is the drivers..

A $100 amp will give a huge difference in sound quality over any amp.

The low impedance HD598 doesn't scale much with amps, at least not a night/day difference to my ears.

i havent had any problems with the drivers, whats with them?

T my ears there is a night and day difference. Even with 32 ohm headphones which are lower than hd 598.

And there is nothing wrong with the drivers.

There was some issues with the first driver versions, they probably fixed that by now.
