Sony NWZ-ZX1 - 35th Walkman Anniversary model - Page 63

How does it work out there (in Japan) Anak, have they always done this pre release demo models (beta so to speak) to listen to in Japan as I do not know anywhere else where manufacturers let you see the physical model unless of course it's at something like the CES show of course.

Is a reason it is done for Sony to gauge last minute feedback from potential customers so they can tweak it before release (still maybe enough time to change programming specs before production ramps up on the line) or simply to drum up interest in it purely from a sales perspective.

Which ever it may be I wish they exercised this method to us poor Europeans!

It depends. Sony has a showroom (and store, but more showroom than store until you hit the upper levels) and they sometimes showcase things either early or whatever. I remember them doing it for the Z10xx before it was released. The Sony building which has the showcase is unlike any other Sony "store" in the world that I've been to (and I've been to them all over the US, Australia, and parts of Europe). If you ever get to Tokyo, it's worth a visit.

Blame the nice helpful guy at Price-Japan, he forgot to add on shipping time after the release date.

As if I'd be one of those mugs standing in the rain waiting for Sony store to open on the 9th Dec to get my ZX1. Think I'll leave that to the Apple guys, they have a thing of first-day release fever.

Interesting, wish Sony just had one flagship store like that in each country, if only they were like Apple on that side of things. Thanks for explanation though, greatly appreciated.

Well, if I could fly out to Japan for release day....

The only store that comes close and it isn't is the one in NYC. They've redone the ones in California to look nicer (they had the ES speakers where some of the Sony stores do not), but it's not what you see in Japan.

With release day, people don't wait in line, really, for a Walkman. I was in Japan on the release day of the Z1070, and I just went to Bic Camera and got it. No muss, no fuss.

Is zx1 or f886 officially released. If not when.

I believe you can get a F886 but the F887 appears to be sold-out in Japan but should be available from mid Nov (so five sellers have told me).

The ZX1 gets released in December.

Is anyone compared f886 with dx50

It's a distant memory for us guys & girls here in Uk in our region outside London area as last year the Sony franchise over here closed (approx 4 stores or more) apart from one store which I think is still going but is just a bog standard small shop, not a big one at that and is far from been a flagship mega store or the like let alone having the luxury of trying new gear a few months before release.  It's like two different worlds!

If only the Sony demand prior launch of a new model was enough to have a line in waiting but unfortunately people do not queue up for sound quality alone anymore, if it was a fashion icon with video conferencing bigger priority than sound quality it might be a different story.

I'm sure if Sony can change their fortunes back around in next few years with global sales like they used to have then I might hopefully see a remergence of Sony stores where I can go and pick up a new EU version of a ZX1 (with no EU volume cap)  on day of release in the UK same time as Japan with no queue!

It's not the question of quality of Sony, but it's the easiness of apple products which tend to win over everything else.

Easiness of itunes purchases and syncing with apple products gives them the edge. I agree Sony walkmans give better sound, but even the ipods give out sound which to many is more than enough.

The ZX-1 is a risk Sony is willing to take stepping up their game but without a Sony official online store, it will lose popularity. Just releasing a player is not enough IMO.I wonder how many units are being manufactured and will be open to others outside Japan. Buying a $700+ player from Japan and shipping it through complete strangers is a mighty risk and the loss during transit will be even greater!

BTW, are there any branded walkman earphones included with the ZX-1?

As long as you paid via Paypal and buy from PJ, you are relatively safe.  I don't think the ZX-1 shipped with any headphones, which is more than fine by me.

I agree with you on Apple's simplicity.  I told my sister once that new Andriod phones are much more capable than any iPhones, she said that Andriod devices are difficult to use.

No, sony's quality has never been in question, only their leadership and marketing direction has gone a stray in timeline under the competition of Apple since Ipod hit the scene way back now, but yes the core of Apples success was the simplicity to use which hooks kids for many to be the first gadget they use and grow up as the brand they will likely stick with for many years to come and of course the i-tunes thingy did them no harm and one Sony could not replicate really. Sony need to bring more fun and innovation to their base models to lure new users to provide a future stepping stone to those higher models.

Have to commend Sony since their change at the helm they have re-directed more to their routes of concentrating on bringing back some of their old principles of making audio gear.

My old HTC HD2 with Windows 6.5 made Android look like an i-phone to operate.  how I miss my old HD2 ( the real swiss army knife of phone software) even after owning a Sony Xperia Z.

Back to ZX1 though...

One thing I would love to see Sony bring back if they are watching is the old in-line remotes they used on the older HDD & MD Walkmans, if they could somehow corporate a way of using in addition also  one's own aftermarket earphone cables into the remote stick with 3.5 jacks both ends this would be a dream come true from a old school Walkman experience brought forward into the new generation of high res Walkmans.

Any one else miss these on Walkmans now a days?

My D-777 PCDPs are still going strong, and I do use them with their inline remotes.

I still have mine.  Love it.  It hasn't seen any play time in ages.  I prefer the the D-E900/905 though.
