Sony NWZ-ZX1 - 35th Walkman Anniversary model - Page 61

Wow, this is certainly devolving into a "SONY LOVERS ONLY!!" thread.

It is just that a lot people are waiting for Sony to make this move since years. They got slammed into a corner by Apple years ago. Now it the time has come and the Sony spirit begins to rise again, before it is too late.  I simply love that idea, can't help.

I have a FIIO E12 and an E12 limited incoming in December, but the new Sony offerings could make the FIIOs obsolete, or both worlds can compliment each other.

Why not let it fly.....:L3000:

Well, from the looks and description of the NWZ-ZX1 it certainly seems to be a very high quality piece of gear fitted in a leather wrapped piece of cut-out aluminum; even the headphone-plug looks the piece... I think it's hard to argue about the mechanical quality at least from what is so far known. And with the price it should!

On a sound-quality level I hope it is more in the Astell  & Kern or better level...

Then I would become "Sony lover" :-)

thinking that it is a sony product, i pretty much assume that it will probably have a more present / tight bass response from astell & kern devices. sony products have really fun bass i think, and very enjoyable. i actually miss the warm, dark and punchy bass of sony a845 that quite lacks in ibasso dx50.

Thanks, AT1987 but I should of stated the NWU7 along side the NWU5 as essentially it is the same as the NWU5 but lesser spec, but essentially was more intrigued if there was a new dedicated offering been designed by Sony for the ZX1 as I have seen a photo of one somewhere which is completely different from the dock design of the NWU3/5/7 models.

Hopefully the ZX1 might still fit either the NWU5 or 7 dock but wander even with the plastic cover insert taken out whether the extra bulg at the bottom of the ZX1 will allow it to fit.

Essenitially I am hoping Sony do produce a new  high quality cradle, sync charge dock that matches and oozes the style and build quality of the ZX1 but won't hold my breath after seeing what they produced with their docks recently for the Xperia Z tablet and phone which was cheap crap plastic with no weight to them and lack of output/ no sync ability and charged the earth for them as Sony usually do.

At least with the X5 you can upgrade as the micro/SD cards come along, provided they don't change the micro/SD specs.

A lot of this will be the cost of having Sony produce for the first time higher quality audio, luxurious, executive design and build finish well as them (Sony) feeling they are been so generous in offering us more flash memory than they have ever done before.

More is always better of course but i think 128gb is for first time a acceptable minimum amount for a dap I could be happy with knowing I cannot expand it and that is using wav files bearing in mind it can deliver on the sound to partner the gorgeous design.   Sure I will change my tune when I fill the player up.

What is the maximum the X5 SD cards can go to in terms of capacity currently?

Although I don't consider the ZX1 good value, at the price Sony is asking they should have upped the specs, like why is the screen only 480p when sony's smart phones in the $300 range have 720p screens, and in the $500+ range have 1080p screens with quad core processor (I'm not asking for quad core on ZX1, that is overkill, but a 720p screen would have no drawbacks, and would just be nicer to use).

Also I find it quite hilarious that sony doesn't include earbuds with the ZX1 "because its high res/audiophile" Then why does the ZX1 have an inbuilt piece of crap mono loudspeaker on its back? whats audiophile about that! I have an Sony xperia phone and the mono loudspeaker is soo rubbish, my sisters iphones speakers sound ten times better, at least they are stereo 2 channel.

Again, Sony have always been able to charge more than average for same specs to other brands as I guess they were once the equivalent of Apple in dominance and customer demand during the 80's, 90's and early 2000's and although they have dropped their standards in terms of cutting edge design and innovative products due to Apple coming up their broadside and swiping them which they have not quite recovered from has not stopped them charging that extra premium still.

I do agree with everything you say there, but owning Sony products down the years have got used to them giving with one hand and taking away with the other, irony on the screen front with the X series had that lovely OLED screen but three or so years down the line they have gone backwards in not been able to find a way to incorporate the technology in a cost friendly manner in amalgamation with their other new features they introduce.  it feels like when we lost Concorde and have gone backwards to having jets half as fast.

Maybe one day Sony will have all the features we want in one package with no weak spots so to speak, imagine this new ZX1 had an OLED screen with expandable SD card slot, but based on their current price structure how much would that of cost (A&K territory definitely).

Say no more on the speaker, clever touch with it been in the Walkman logo but as you point out quality as per usual will be a waste of time and space for a high end series device like this.  Hold the press... that is not what the extra bulge is for is it!? no, not a higher quality amp section but a tiny speaker unit.

The wheels have been fallen off Sony for a while now, but a change of leadership at the helm and a focus on putting quality to the forefront again and taking high quality audio more seriously rather than mass market mp3 cost effective mass profit route been the only avenue in audio has been like a good quick pit stop and the wheels are back on.

Just hope the nuts were not cross threaded and fall off coming out the pit lane, only time will tell.  "Phoenix from the flames" etc....

I dont like products like that.it is like driving a car that will more than get you there, but you just wont feel any sense of luxury and satisfaction which is the reason i buy these things in the first place.
Its not like i couldn't use my phone and tablet to play music.
Fiio could be a nice additional toy, but i need something that feels better in any respect

Yes I agree with your statement regarding so so quality and Sony premium standing although from what I've read the new X5 is at the other end of the scale in every department. Only time will tell of course and I will wait for both products to be reviewed and compared to each other before I commit.

At present, 2x64GB. I say present because provided they do not alter the micro/SD specs, future cards i.e. 128GB+ would work.

If they fill out that curve at the back with memory slots or just add more flash memory, it would be a lot more tempting.

Or fill the "missing" space out with a "monster amp section..." killing the need for seperates.. I presume flash is physically small; included memory size is a political decision rather than a physical space one... In any case it seems one can luckily grap music over wifi from a NAS or similar when at home... I presume 128GB will be sufficient for many people when in the field... That said, I'm all-in for more memory  I'm personally very interested in how this Sony will compare to an iPhone + an Astell& Kern AK10 since an AK10 is a lot less expensive than this Sony...

what if the Sony ZX2 comes out next year and improves where the ZX1 could do bettter (amp, screen, memory slot) :P

I guess we all hope that technology will progress. The ZX1 will not become any worse by an improved model coming on the market.. ;)

Hang in there folks.  Just 5 more weeks before the ZX1 is available for purchase.  I may have to show my Z1070 the door and thanks for its service.

I was beginning to entertain the thought of selling the Z1060, because I seem to be using the iPad and iPhone a lot  more these days, but after a comparison, which really it wasn't IMO, I'll have to wait to see just how much better the ZX1 is over the Z. Good thing you still have the F et al. to keep you over...
