Sony NWZ-ZX1 - 35th Walkman Anniversary model - Page 388

Yes the latest updates is amazingūüėć

I have no idea what a 'capped' ZX1 sounds like at 75-80% into moderately sensitive IEMs, but I sure as hell wouldnt want to be the guinea pig chosen to test human tolerance to my ZX1 at that level for an hour or so - seriously uncomfortable without copious amounts of alcohol and that's from someone who lives in a town where live music is invariably played at ear-splitting levels.

The owner of the largest headphone store in Australia has posted on numerous occasions that he believes that many of us have permanent hearing damage - he's had potential customers in the shop auditioning headphones at levels that just leave him shaking his head. I'm all for having 'headroom to spare' but at least Sony doesnt do what Samsung have done with my Galaxy S and throw up a warning any time I want to crank the volume past - wait for it - 50%,  You've gotta love the litigious society that spawned that particular request from marketing  ;)

Complete newbie to the hobby and first post. Very pleased to get notification from Amazon.de that ZX1 will be delivered next week (great per-order price of Euro 507). All I need now is some decent headphones and Amp and necessary cables, budget Euro 1000, would be very grateful for recommendations. Cheers ..Brad, Austria.

Good luck, hope you enjoy it. What type of sound signature do you prefer? That will help others give you some nice suggestions.

..and do you want headphones or iems? If IEM I personally would skip the amp and just search for an iem that satisfies the sound signature that you like....unless they are quite hard to drive an amp will only have minimal benifit and if you are just starting out it is more important to find the sound signature you like.

All IMO of course.

Thanks guys, good questions.  More research I think ;-)

Great advice, and until you find the headphones or IEM's you like, buying an amp will be problematic since it's synergy with your headgear will be important. Said differently - ideally an amp should be matched to the headgear you favor, so until you know what you like, choosing an amp will be difficult (=crap shoot).

You're starting at the top, aren't you...  The ZX1 is a first-rate piece of gear.

Any high-quality IEMs will sound terrific with the ZX1.  You don't need an amp unless you're planning on using big, hard-to-drive headphones (that is, headphones most of us would not think of as portable).  So look around and do some research on IEMs - there's an increasing number of really good ones, both universal and custom.

Just to note how good off-the-shelf equipment has gotten, not that long ago I was walking around with various iDevice sources, custom interconnects, expensive amps, custom IEMs, and custom IEM cables.  I still love my CIEMs and associated cabling, but while my favorite set is currently being repaired, my stock ZX1 and stock Sennheiser IE800 IEMs sound a good deal better than the best of those old rigs did.

Get good IEMs and you'll be very happy.

According to sony:

"Update content:  Enhanced the security of the body software"

This has nothing to do with sound quality. You guys are only wishing and believing there is a difference to sound.

So Sony releases an update 1.1, their first update. Then very shortly after they magically discover untold improvements and deliver that goodness to it's customers, I think not. It was a block to prevent Geohot's Android root method. Read above.

Was it that big a deal that they had to block rooting? Anyway I don't hear any difference or any change in ui since updatingv

Most companies seem to enjoy blocking rooting... as if it's the worst thing consumers can do to their devices.

Welcome to Head-Fi - this particular delusion is as old as firmware updates.

I had no idea. I guess it could mean that someone else is making better software for their product than their own team :) I guess it's similar to when apple blocked rockbox from their devices.

I just tried Geohot's root method to no success, damn it, I was looking forward to installing V4A and hear some REAL improvements.

Will keep trying. This root nonsense is equal to DVD/Bluray region blocking, merely a big pain.

I believe it has more to do with people blocking their devices. That being said, at least let me remove whatever programs you out on my device... lots of crap, especially on cell phones, which are useless.
