Mate, I really hope you arent sock-puppeting us and that you do have a genuinely defective unit, I've been using mine for less than 24 hours - had to scour Bangkok to even get one - and thus far I'm extremely happy with the user experience. I'm afraid your post reads like some of the one-star Amazon 'reviews' that seem to have been deliberately placed by competitors against a wall of 4 and 5-star customer reviews. If you do have a defective unit, I'll be interested to hear what your warranty experience is like - until then, I'd suggest that you reconsider statements like the one about your 10-year old iPod before posting again, I have a 3-year old iTouch and the sound quality isnt in the same universe, even if Apple's UI is the benchmark I still hold all other DAPs to. I've also owned expensive Sony DAPs before - particularly expensive given the Australian RRP at the time - and the UI is one area where Sony shines compared to its Chinese competitors.

Can someone tell me if the line out on the device is a true line out similar to the well-known Apple LOD that bypasses the internal amp? And I presume one end of the supplied interconnect is the ubiquitous 3.5 mm jack that I can connect to any typical headphone amp? Thanks.

Firstly, I suggest you reconsider telling folks what to do. And your suggestion that I'm some kind of apple plant is offensive.

I don't think it's a defective unit, I just think it is much clunkier than I was expecting. It's taken me forever to sort out the tagging and I've still not fixed it in poweramp. The issue with the launcher is ongoing. I've had to disable the effects for extra power, this means no EQ in the stock player. The amp stage is disappointingly lacking in power too. It can't really drive my Ety ER-4S, people will say it's not designed to, but to me, if it can't drive those, the amp stage doesn't deserve that name.

The ipod is actually an iMod, for me the test is whether the ZX1 is is close enough to it in SQ to give it the edge as a single unit with amp built in. Sound-wise it's fine, but I've been really shocked by how annoying it is to use. There's no mac interface except for a very basic drag and drop. The MediaGo software on PC is better but does not fix tagging and unnecessarily re-encodes all files added. The battery is only acceptable if basically everything is turned off. The iMod is much easier to navigate and with iTunes it's very easy to fix tags etc. I've not decided whether to sell the ZX1 yet, but so far it's form factor advantage is not sufficient to convince me it's worth the SQ and UI gap.

Random question (maybe a bug): anyone else have their wifi turn on randomly by itself? It seems to happen maybe once a day. I will swear it will be completely off (along with all other syncing or network connectivity) and I'll randomly find it on every so often. Minor annoyance, but I want to make sure I'm not going crazy.

Sounds like it may be defective. I don't have any freezing when using with PC. It also drives my er4s no problem, even better when using the volume mod mentioned earlier in this thread.

I believe it is a true line-out - it's Sony's proprietary WM port and I think there are only a couple of companies which make a LOD for it :

http://www.amazon.com/FiiO-L5-Line-Cable-Walkman/dp/B003UCI2CI

No prizes for guessing which is cheaper, but I expect that both sell very well. Sony also sell a dock for the older Walkman models but it doesnt appear large enough for the ZX1

forza audio works also make lod cables with custom option as well

Thanks guys for the replies re LOD. At least I know how to connect to a generic amp with 3.5mm input.

I just tested the ZX-1 at Sony's own flagship store here in Singapore two hours ago and even using the proprietary cable supplied with the new PHA-2 amp, they couldn't get it to connect to the ZX-1. What a let down. Apparently pairing the two would allow native DSD playback but alas ...

According to here...

http://helpguide.sony.net/dmp/nwzf880_zx1/v1/en/content/headphone-amp.html

It should have worked.

I don't have a PHA-2, at least not yet :-), but I do use a Fiio E18 connected to my ZX1 with a LOD from Forza Audio Works.

I use the LOD on it with The Intruder. Works perfectly.

I made my own :-

http://www.head-fi.org/t/680853/sony-nwz-zx1-35th-walkman-anniversary-model/2625#post_10122571

Recently I also got a Fiio WM-port LOD that Currawong bought to test my ZX1 with an external amp. That LOD also seems to have a lower voltage output like my DIY so when lineout into an external amp, I have to crank up the volume knob on the amp a little more than usual (compared to say the HM-901 or some other source).

I love that plug!! I had Mimic cables rewrap my Fiio LOD. Looks much better, but I'd like a sexy plug like that.

Has the mystery of the ZX-1's output impedance been solved yet?

According to some russian site, it should be around 2 Ohm.

The thing about amplifier is not power, so I guess it is about frequency response and noise.
