Well there aren't any daps out there that doesn't get some kind of improvement with some kind of stack. There will always be some dac/amp that's better than what's inside the dap.

At the moment my "stack" is only more bulky than the ZX1 by the extra USB OTG cable. I have my Z1 in one pocket and my uHA-120Dsc on the other connected with a 1.5m long USB OTG across.

If I get the ZX1, I can lose the cable but that is about it. My setup is certainly not elegant, but works very well. ZX1, while not DX100 size is still on the larger side was expecting too much I guess.

you can't really compare a Sony phone to a Walkman... the phone may say it's a Walkman as well but the name is the only similarity, for a start it doesn't have the S-Master Pro amp and that is a key ingredient to any dedicated Walkman.

Well we all want a perfect DAP and I think the ZX-1 is approaching that benchmark.  I think it achievable if Sony abandons the larger screen and use that real estate to further improved the internal amplification.  However, I'm happy as a clam with every thing the ZX-1 able to do so far.  Out of the DACs that I have, I am only able to connect the ZX-1 with two DACs so far, namely the Pico DAC/AMP & PS Audio Digital Link III.  My other DACs (Nad M51, W4S DAC2, and FiiO E17) were not able to see a USB digital signal coming from the ZX-1.  Can others share the experience with the DAC connection?

Purk... are you considering getting the Chord Hugo DAC/Amp being released at the CES?

Seeing that it is an Android device, you might be able to get it working with a third party app like the USB Audio Player PRO bypassing Android's bad audio stack and USB OTG support. It might just improve the DAC that is already working by default, Android tend to resample everything to 48kHz before sending it out, ruining it by quite a bit.

There is a trial version there. Please report back, interested to see how much the ZX1 support third party players.

There is no headphones plugged in my Z1 at any time. Actually there isn't* even any audio processing done there, volume control and all is done on my USB DAC/amp.  That being said so, I am looking forward to try them side by side when it actually gets to UK...

purk, would you mind posting your impressions on ZX-1 as a DAC alone in comparison to the ones you own? I'm seriously considering getting it, but I would have to use it as a DAC for my main speaker rig too.

I think the internal amp module of Sony smart phones and tablet may me identical to the lower end dedicated Walkman models. While sound good it is several notches below in performance when compared to the model with S-master module onboard. Still I take the sound of the standard model over any iPod any time.

With excellent apps like USB Audio Player Pro coming out on Android and fixing Android's bad audio limitation, my Z1 with my portable DAC/Amp sounding better than ever with 24bit support. I would really like to compare the ZX1 with my Z1 stack side by side.

My ZX1 replaced my 5s/m8 stack for portable use.

Wow, you hear no sonic differences at all? Hmmmm, that could mean the F886/7 is the bargain audiophile DAP to be had.

I was thinking about getting that instead but reports of bad battery life steered me away. Also if I was going to import from Japan might as well go all the way smily_headphones1.gif
