Sony NWZ-ZX1 - 35th Walkman Anniversary model - Page 147

I've gone through and whacked out a bunch of OT posts about pros 'n cons of SACD, how to rip it, etc. Bring that to Sound Science, etc. I've also gone to whack out some irrelevant topics. Please stay on topic before I start locking people out.

For the record, for -now- (20th Dec) the ZX1 firmware does not support DSD natively may it be DSF or DFF. Sony's Media Go 2.6 does support but I believe it converts to a ZX1 supportable playable format.

As for Fiio X5 & ZX1, let's revisit when the X5 is widely available and production version in the hands of come customers here. Although the ZX1 is unavailable at the moment, it'll be available much sooner than the X5's proposed March timeframe.

Other products (Fiio/Clip, etc.) please bring to their appropriate respective threads. If someone, however, has attempted to couple their ZX1 to a Fiio DAC/amp, those kinds of posts here on the success of the ZX1 as a transport, or the differences in SQ in coupling the ZX1 to an external amp vs headphone out, etc.

This, and how are people linking to those amps? (via headphone out? or via WM-port line out?)

And if someone has the AK100/100MK2/120, etc. how are the user experiences compare (i,.e. regarding UI responsiveness, etc.). I guess most of my other questions were answered.

For using the ZX1 as a transport (to an external USB DAC/Amp), you'll need the WMC-NWH10 USB DAC cable. This basically converts the proprietary WM-port to a female USB Type A port. So far I've successfully used the Leckerton UHA-6Mk2 only with the ZX1, I've not been able to use it with the Resonessence Lab Herus, nor the Tralucent DAC/Amp One prototype.

As for using the ZX1 as a source to an external amp, one needs something like the Bispa BSP-HPCL-8NSGLWM which takes the analogue signals out of the WM-port into an external amp.

About UI responses, I can only speak in comparison for my formerly owned AK120. For me at least the size of the AK120 screen took longer to scroll through than the ZX1's larger screen. Also when it comes to using the GUI when a hires FLAC is playing, the ZX1 is more responsive. Further more the ZX1 one has a search feature (since it benefits from Android's soft keyboard) which is faster for me to look for particular artists, tracks, or albums than the AK120's scrolling. Also the time lag in just clicking on "play" is shorter on the ZX1 than the AK120.

Volume step granularity though the AK120 is finer with smaller incremental steps. Size-wise, the AK120 definitely fits into the pocket easier. The ZX1 is more like a smart phone (and if you're already carrying a smart phone, it's like carrying 2xsmart phones).

Great explications AnakChan, could not have put it any better,

would you know if its possible to find any variation of the Bispa outside Japan?

My bad...living in Japan for so long, I assumed that WM-port LODs are as easy to obtain as Apple iDevice LODs as they are easily/readily available here (even kits if you want to make your own WM-port LOD). Is this not the case overseas?

A quick look on eBay, there's a Fiio L50 WM-port LOD at least. I thought makers like DHC, Toxic, or Whiplash would also make WM-port LODs but I couldn't find them in their homepage just now.

Fiio L5 is the LOD for sony walkman...
Not sure of its quality
Thanks AnakChan for cleaning this thread up (only wish he could do the same for the X5 thread too... LoL).

For the line out, I hope if someone can confirm if its a true line out similar to other audiophile DAP or more ipod level like LOD that is designed to work with portable amp. If possible, I would be grateful if someone can share some impressions of the SQ for the same.

The NW-ZX1 is a Walkman. At least in Japan it is. Isn't the NW-ZX1 advertised as a Walkman overseas? I'm off to the e-earphone festival this weekend and I'm sure the'll be some WM-port LODs around. Will test to see if it works analogue line out.

[OT] I may jump onto the X5 thread to see whatcha on about that ;-).[/OT]

I have on order a WM LOD and a WM USB out. Will report on my findings once I have them. ZX1 via headphone out to TU-05 was unsatisfactory. Not sure why, but the combo just didn't work.

Well, I think double amping is a hit 'n miss kinda thing? Not to say that it's always bad to double amp, but at the same time may not always work in a positive way?

I was actually throwing out L5 as an alternative to Bispa without reading your subsquent post.. Words can be tricky to convey different meaning at times LoL
Enjoy the e-earphone festival. Hope it will be fruitful

Agreed. But this was my first time experiencing suboptimal sound from my tu-05, which rarely lets me down. frown.gif

Thanks Anak and everyone who chimed in regarding the Line-out.

Well, my enthusiasm is definitely winding down... I guess the AK100MK2 is still on my radar...

Thanks.
