3) Is sound quality a step up from either the FiiO X3 or iBasso DX50 and can it compete with higher priced (but crappy) DAPs? Not in terms of power, but in terms of sound quality? (especially when using the line-out option)

4) Has anyone measured battery life while ONLY playing music (either MP3s or FLACs) to see if it's up to spec?

1)... with my KEF's (not hard to drive I believe(?), volume is down 5-10% compared to using IEM's but still pretty loud, so at a guess you'd probably need to amp.

2)... both Headphone-Out & Line-Out are very clean with the PHA-2... others are using more exotic stuff with no complaints.

4)... battery life is normal Sony using RB music files, I normally get about 15hrs out of it (that's with F887, ZX1's battery is bigger)... Hi-Res I'm not sure about.

Currently I have a Cowon C2 and a FiiO X3, love and hate some things on both of them and I've always liked Sony. Thought about getting the F887 (or which ever one is 64GB) but, then I remembered it's just 64GB and I'm planning on re-ripping my CDs to FLACs or 320kbps which of course will take more space so 128GB sounds good. My other option would be to go the AK120/100 but still I'd be living with a crappy UI experience... I don't think I want that anymore...

Thanks all.

1. I tried it with my LCD2s; Volume is way way down. Then with the Denon D5000 and volume was way way down and it did not sound good at all.

2. Dunno. I not used it with an amp yet.

3. SQ vs X3. "Step up" really depends on what you prefer. Compared to the X3, for me the ZX1 sounds clearer than the X3, with a less bloated bass, and a bit more sparkle. For me this makes it a step up over the X3.

4. I''ve not run it down to 0% with Wi-Fi/Bluetooth off. But ran it down to 14% over 3 days with a day of Wi-Fi on, and about 5 hours use.

Thanks for your responses.

Wow... it cannot even handle a Denon D5000 well? Are you playing with me? The D5000s are just 25 Ohms and only needs 0.26 mW for them to reach 90d BSPL!!! That definitely does not bodes well for "straight-to-the-jack" connection unless I probably use my IEMs (Denon C300 and Shure 215SE). So I guess an amp is INDEED NEEDED with this guy and I guess the same would ring true for any of the new Walkmans!?

I actually like the sound quality of the X3, I find it quite tasty. By what you are saying, the ZX1 is basically brighter. That's not bad either I guess. The HiSound Studio V sports a similar signature... (but the software is crap!)

I guess I have to decide if I want to buy this or the AK120 as a present from myself to myself! :p

But aarrrghhh... I'm tired of crappy interfaces (and the AK is well over $1100... hmmmm...)

Thanks.

The ZX1 is an iem DAP .

Even with Bey. 770LE 32ohm, It could not drive it well, where as the Z1070 was.

can't argue with that Turok, the M500's were louder with the Z1070 & the volume drop was minimal... they have different amps mind.

I'm not one to wear over-heads on my travels so it's no real concern to me but I do prefer listening to my KEF's amp'ed, I'm a bit of a volume junkie truth be known.

I was surprised about the D5000s as well. I think it might be because I have moved to headphones that have a much wider soundstage, so when I tried the D5000 it sounded congested to me and strangely lacking in bass. I hadn't used the D5000s since June, but it didn't sound as good as I remembered. Having tried the D5000 with my PC setup, yeah it doesn't sound all that good with the ZX1. Compared to the LCD2, the volume is louder, but there's not a lot of room for more volume. When I go back to my K10, I have to lower the volume by 4-5 button presses. Bare in mind the ZX1 has 2 volume sliders, a Master and a Music/Video/Games, with both at max, the D5000 was loud enough, but started to break up quite badly.

For reference I use volume 23 on the X3 for K10, and around 30 for the D5000, and the X3 goes upto 60. I too like the X3 sound, but the ZX1 changes things that for me are better.

You may want to hang on for the fiio x5 out in march then.  Around $350 or so and an "improved" interface over the x3.

The ZX1 is out of stock right now anyway!

I've only manage to find master-volume, where can I find the other?

When I press the volume button it brings up a screen. At the top it's Master Volume, underneath is the Music, video, games & other media, then under that it's Notifications.

Can also go to Settings=>Sound=>Volumes.

I've been searching for the secondary volume for over a week, on the Z1070 & F887 it's in separate locations... cheers for that.

Ugh.! :(

Hopefully a "line-out" to an amp could rock this nice player then...

Ugh! (again! LOL)

Well, I like the sound output of the X3, it's nice and the interface is Ok but I still have problems with it properly creating the library (i.e. if I put ALL of my songs in the 64gb microSD card, I DON'T get any listings for artists, albums, etc. It seems it has a limitation and they don't even know how to handle it!) If the X5 will be as crappy regarding library database creation, I don't think it will be for me... Also, will it take AK's turn and allow for multiple microSD cards or at least provide 64gb internal and microSD support?

I might wait for a "used" ZX1 or something like that...

X5 has no internal memory but does have 2 MicroSD card slots, so you win some; you lose some.

No DAP is (yet!) perfect.... :o

Hi, Rob49 -

I can't claim to be an authority, and I'm not an engineer. Still, until a few years ago I was following SACD closely, and I'm comfortable saying that I'm well-informed on the subject. It is possible that a receiver would output DSD stereo, but not surround sound. Unless the technology has changed in the last few years, the surround sound program is essentially guaranteed to be output as PCM.

As I mentioned earlier, it's often the case that the stereo SACD signal is also converted to PCM, depending on the equipment.

Regards,

Brian

Hi Brian,

I can't claim that you're wrong, but I must admit that I thought it was possible to listen to DSD signal in surround, and not just stereo ?

I can't believe some of the stuff I've read on here LOL " the fiio x3 is so heavy it will pull your pajamas down " really buddy really the x3 weighs less then an ipod classic

And I personally haven't had any bugs with my x3

I'm really pumped to hear a zx1 tho, I think it's cool that sony finally is trying to take the crown of quality sound dap's, I always loved my walkman cd players
