A quick follow up since ownership.....

Coming up for a week Thursday since I received my ZX1 and embarrassing as this is I have not had as much time with it as i would of liked but so far listening to an average of an hour each night so far with either my JH16's or the Sony MDR-7520 both with modded TWag Hybrid V3 cable have been my iem and headphone of preference whilst I get used to the new Walkman's sound properties.  Yet to try this with my Heir 5.0 & Sony MDR-1R's which I will get around to doing next few days.

All I can say so far as I plan to do an in depth impression or review soon but first week's impressions after owning the X series for since day one and owned the Z for several months a while back have to say on the whole my anticipation if Sony could match the premium design and materials used with the SQ to match and for Sony's first attempt at a premium "reference" Walkman has thankfully from my fledgling first week with this has been worth the wait.

I am finding the highs very easy on the ear as I had a perception before receiving the ZX1 with this been the Japanese model it might of been a bit piercing or peaky for my ears like my Z1000 heapdhones were (hence why I ironically got the more refined Japan 7520 model) but I am pleasantly surprised with the top end on the ZX1 so far.

The bass notes hit lower than I thought they would with this Walkman as i was worried with it been their reference player was going to be a bit flatter response but the control and execution of the bass notes is just right.

Only thing that is not quite there for me is it feels a little recessed in the mids which feel like they get a bit lost with the wide expansive soundstage this player is capable of.  I have been know to a mid centric guy with my taste in signatures though

Only other personal niggle I am having so far with the SQ  also is, am I the only one  finding live recordings are just not quite there in terms of reproduction of atmosphere?  I have been wondering if this is because it can sound a little analytical at times with although not an overly bright sounding Walkman can just be lacking that analogue warmth or touch to proceedings.

It does remind me of listening to floor standing speakers the way the bass is presented and this amp is more than plenty for my 24 ohm 7520's with plenty of headroom to control instruments with plenty of power on tap to drive the headphones with authority giving  a dynamic full sound.  For me my Z1070 Walkman struggled to do this with my 24 ohm headphones whether it was the Z1000, MDR-R1 or 7520's.

That's it for now until I rack some more serious hours on this and also run this with the Heir 5.0's & MDR-R1's in next few days as well as adding to the lowly ten gig of music  have added to the Walkman so far all in WAV.

I looked at your pictures

You use most of them from WM ZX 1 hp out to PHA 2 line in

I have not see you use from WM ZX 1 as source to your PHA 2 micro USB DAC

Is In that case PHA 2 can not use with WM ZX 1 as USA DAC function ?

Please advise

Thank you

Well, i can't say a lot when one team has spent £100 million on half a new team and the other spent 50p and is 1st! But that is another story of who to trust with to spend your money and a 35 year old sulker was not the answer.

I am about to retire to bed in a a minute but will send a pm tomorrow night and talk some more and arrange to meet up some where to have a listen to the ZX1 which the pleasure would all be mine.  I am off over Christmas so will be available during the day as well if it made things easier.

The good old AV32R, I have the DP version, but as you can see I have a full Tag component set up with the 250 watt amps driving B&W's so hold them as the candle for which all portable gear should for me strive to in terms of a SQ.  I have the Oppo with latest 32 bit sabre dacs and still does not sound as good as the DVD32R for music through my AV32R DP which has sharc chips over ten years old now! how does that figure?  They don't make hi-fi like that any more unless you can spend a price of a small house on one!

Pm you tommorow night

Rudi... I don't think you'll be able use the ZX1/PHA-2 combo via the WM-Port-USB connector  > USB/USB Mini... looks like that WM-port-USB connector is primarily for connection into a Hi-Fi system... someone will have to come up with a dedicated WM-Port/Mini USB cable.

I am sending both my F887/PHA-2 to 'Chord Co.' within the next month (the cable people not the other Chord) so they can tell me all my options, I may ask them to make me a Sarum 'tuned array' mini-mini jack cable (yeah right)... if I could get my hands on a couple WM-Ports that could help as they could mess about with them... they've got some seriously nice USB cables.

Mr Potato-Head is the apt guy for your Spuds team... normally I would want to fry your cretinous wimp infested mob at WHL but tonight you can beat us 5-0 (pretty please), I'm dying to see Fat-Sam sacked... opposition is seriously growing against the Olympic stadium move, there will be trouble ahead for sure.

Your ZX1 will open up gradually, every day it seems to get better, the ZX1 appears a lot smoother now... loving the ZX1 on its own, the F887(ZX1)/PHA-2 combo is great for 'live' music... I told you not to scrimp on your sources, you Israelites are so tight with your dosh.

Is the PHA-2 worth buying with the ZX1 and what connectivity configurations can you have between the two? I am a bit puzzled about the ways ZX1 owners have been trying to hook both of them together. What is the ultimate way to interconnect the two and what is the cabling requirement?

The PHA-2 package itself came with the cable specifically made for Sony Walkman F88x and ZX1 already, just plug one end into the Walkman and the other end into the mini USB port (with an extra pin on the side) on the far left.

Not really that complicated IMHO, we just have to find that particular inside the package.

This is the only way to pair between WM ZX 1 and PHA 2 with hi res cable

I tried use USB DAC cable , the result NO Sound

BTW, here's the cable I just mentioned before

I wish that someone could figure out the pinouts so we could make our own DIY cables for connecting Walkman to AlgoRhythm Solo -db easily.

The info is on the net if I am not mistaken, there are sony boards discussing the subject about older sony players so pretty sure the ZX1 must be designed similarly protocol wise. It'll be a matter of time until someone will make it available cheaply on the Internet. One different thing though what's that sticking pin on the right side of the connector? That does not look standard on USB style cables?

Is the PHA-2 worth buying though?

between the two... Line-Out via female LOD, Headphone-Out & Hi-Res USB.

The PHA-2 is also a stand alone DAC/Amp

Thanks according to your experience is the sq out of the dac better than the ZX1?

Which of the above config is the best sound wise?

If I have other amps do I really need this one?
