Easy answer:

Because for many of us the top only criterion is:.....drum roll....> SQ <.....period (to quote Obama..lol).

The other stuff like looks, album art, groovy UI, and buttons = don't-give-a-shirt.

the differences are minimal imo... the ZX1 has a tinge more up top & about +1 clear-bass down below.

The F886/7 & ZX1 almost demand good quality recordings, bad ones really are shown up for what they are, crap recordings (ponders an Obama moment)... these are very detailed DAP's and a bit unforgiving, having owned a E12 & enjoyed it I can see where the X3/5 might be more enjoyable, they won't be better or worse they'll have a more warm presentation... flavours of your choice is down to your taste, mines a double Sony, cheers.

The ZX1 fully justifies its price difference over the F887... more capacity, better materials & design, the tactile buttons are way easier, bigger battery for Hi-Res so will last longer, stronger jack socket so will support 1/4 headphone adaptors and you get a case... I'm essentially pairing the F887/PHA-2 together (you don't have remove the case to use the Sony bands, very clever case design & I kinda dislike the case) and using the ZX1 on its own.

Got mine in today and have been playing around with it for a bit. Damn this thing is a solid brick! It's so tactile and rich...with the leather ('like'?) back, the brushed metal case, and the buttons with such a positive click. It truly feels premium.

Sound-wise right out of the box I hear a marked improvement over the F807. More expansive soundstage, touch deeper bass, bit of an edge in treble extension. And it is much more spacious at the same time. So far I like what I'm hearing. And thankfully it seems to play pretty well with the FA-4E.

I'll reserve more detailed thoughts for a bit later as I've read the unit does undergo a pretty significant burn in improvement with 10-ish hours into it.

keep the praises flowing...sweetens the waiting period while assuring my brain that the hole in my pocket might actually end up looking nice :p

Wow! What a difference a day makes. Been away from this thread for a day or so and, well, such controversy!

My argument is that the SQ for the ZX1 is on par, if not better (which is my opinion), and all of the other features that the ZX1 offers, renders the TP inadequate, if not out of date, for a modern day DAP. Especially for the price.

My Tera sounded excellent with the 'phones I had when I owned it. I am not saying it is bad, quite the contrary (a great player), just saying that, comparitively speaking, it has lost a lot of ground to Sony's offering.

Open and airy describes the ZX1 for me as well.

Tera & NW-ZX1 Comparison

My impressions comparing the two with the following setup

- FitEar MH335DW

- Tera: Wav

- ZX1: FLAC

Tera

- bass is lean

- treble extends smoothly but not sparkly

- more mid focused than the ZX1

- feels more neutral

- feels more organic

ZX1

- deeper bass -> sub-bass extension

- (I could be wrong about this but) sounds a teeny weeny tad more U-shaped coming from the Tera

- treble is sparkly

- more "hi-fi"ish and somewhat more clinical

- feels very systematically "produced"

Summary

ZX1 definitely grabs my attention more easily as it's so clean cut, precise, and (as mentioned) clinical. Whereas the Tera feels more "fluid". I'll use the ZX1 when I'm on the move to 'n fro work, walking around whilst shopping, or at the local Starbucks whilst escaping from paternal duties. But I'll use the Tera when I'm in the gym, or going for a run outside.

I'd....be.....out....of....breath......to....even.....worry......about....that......

But at least I dont' risk cracking the NW-ZX1 screen by dropping something on it, or dropping it on the bitumen road.

Yes, that must be it! One thing I'm more excited about than I thought I'd be is the presence of the physical buttons on the side. I just love being able to press pause without having to do like on the F807 and hit power, then slide the unlock, then finally get to the music screen. I think this will also save battery since you don't have to activate the screen nearly as much.

And yes, the button quality is truly master class as someone mentioned earlier... The build quality of the whole thing is fantastic.
