Obviously, if I don't agree a customs value, like you suggest, then I dread to think of the customs charges on an item that will be in the region of $800 + !! ( I certainly don't want to end up paying another £100-£200 for this item in customs charges !! )

We tried to get them to go the whole hog on Customs 'gift' & $30 (USD) value but they weren't up for it so we agreed on $110 (USD) for each ZX1, there was no point asking for it to be sent as a 'gift' in that scenario as it would be over the £30 'gift' limit.

Think we drove the poor guy nuts, payments from different sources, confusion over the address (because of the multiple Paypal payments), constant reassuring over Customs, that was just me, my mate took it to the next level Part-1 after I was done.... Part-2 will start next Thursday I'll expect when I'll wind my mate up about delivery concerns, we'll have the guy at Price-Japan in a asylum before the ZX1's arrive, that esteemed hobby of Japanese self-torture will seem like a breeze in the park.

Did I ever mention that there's only 9days 5hours to go until the ZX1 is released? , GMT time.

I've ordered from PriceJapan before, and chose the cheaper shipping option.  Everything went perfect, with excellent communication.  I'd order from them again, and am just about to pull the trigger on the NWZ-ZX1.

PriceJapan no longer delivers through DHL though. They recently switched to Fedex due to too many delivery losses, PJ claims here: http://www.pricejapan.com/front/e_notice_view.php?code=415

I preordered through PJ and chose the bank transfer in order to safe the Paypal percentage. They provided a trustful domestic bank account and confirmed the credit via email already. I decided for the more expensive former-DHL-now-Fedex delivery and not EMS because EMS delivery could cause some extra customs hassles in my country. Fedex would bring it through customs and just let me pay the extra amounts directly.

I did some live recordings last night with my good old MZ-RH1 Hi-MD and recognized that the combined jog lever for play/pause/enter/ff/fr starts making trouble not executing anymore due to contact problems. Still could use it with the remote though but I think it's time to switch to the 21century with the ZX1 in T -10days!

My favourite ever player ! Mine still works, although the remote is starting to play up. I'm hoping to buy a ZX-1 at some point, but have just ordered a F886

Mine unfortunately doesn't reliably record anymore :( I've corrupted two discs on it, so use my MZ-NH1 for the odd recording now which is much better built. Also OLED displays are are less than half the brightness they used to be. Its had some hard use and likewise intend to get the ZX1 soon. Incidentally when I listen to both units on my MDR-1R's the NH1 sounds better to my ears!

If the ZX1 had recording functions like the RH1, it would have been really the perfect Walkman. What a Hi-MD Walkman like the RH1 did have going for it was that it was both an agreeable player to navigate and a competent recorder. Sony's current prosumer flash recorders aren't so appealing as players.
P.S. I notice that Hi-MD is totally absent from that Sony Walkman history... redface.gif

Ah, the Made in Japan Hi-MD Walkmans. Legendary. Sony's best ever.
I enjoyed my EH1 for playback also better than the RH1's; Slightly fatter sound. Also my RH1's didn't sound the same either, but I suspect that is because of a difference in use : one didn't have the headphone out burned-in much at all, being tethered to the computer for upload/download purposes (via a USB hub with switch to spare the OLED display) mostly.
Anyhow, my DX100 just blows any of these away SQ-wise. Leagues above. Therefore although I am interested in this ZX1, but have serious doubt it will really compete with the likes of DX100, HM901 or AK120.

Walkman history

Thankyou for the links.

I was surprised to see the NW-ZX1 video (first link) mention Chladni figures, which very few people are aware of, these days. There's a famous and mysterious place in Scotland, called Rosslyn Chapel, which is associated with the Knights Templar, Masons, and all manner of other historic figures and events (it was even included in that nonsense, but very popular, film - Dan Brown's 'The Da Vinci Code'). The chapel includes a cornucopia of codified symbolic references in it's architecture and elaborate interior stonemasonry, and one astute individual, in recent times, noticed that one set of symbols therein can be decoded as representing the Chladni figures. In light of this, the progression of notes to which the carved Chladni figures pertain has been played on musical instruments. Unfortunately, it is believed that various stonemasonry restorations, over past centuries, may have unintentionally altered the precise composition/progression of Chladni figures / musical notes, so we cannot now be certain that the musical equivalent sounds exactly as the original composer intended.

Apologies for the digression slightly OT, but I found the above quite fascinating when I learned of it, so felt it worthy of relating here.

Regarding the second of your links, I note with interest the omission, in the Walkman History, of the E-905 Discman, although the D-777 (my personal favourite) is included.

Is there anyone contributing here, to this thread, that will be able to directly compare the NW-ZX1 to the NW-F88x, and provide a mini review of the audible differences in performance, when the NW-ZX1 is available a week or so from now? I'm particularly interested to hear from anyone listening to the DAPs, side-by-side, using multi-BA CIEMs.

.

I have not decided yet but I think I am somehow going towards to ZX1 for the moment, instead of X5. Still I will wait to see reviews about both of them. The thing is, expected user profile for both daps interestingly vary a lot. Sony seems to have more serious and focused people while FiiO has more youth crowd. I don't want to start a fight or discussion here about this but the thing I tried to explain with my broken English, it bothered me in X5 thread. Of course I am not gonna make my decision depending on this but I just happened to learn it can have an effect on mood.

Also it seems to me ZX1 + PHA 2 would be a killer combo, Sony probably made them for each other. Gotta read and search more about PHA 2. I think it is already out and there are people who owns it.

Yeah, but then everything that makes the NW-ZX1 a nicely-designed DAP goes out the window if one is going to turn it into a stack.

That is why I remain interested in the X5. The X5 looks (on paper, at least) to be self-sufficient, whereas the NW-ZX1 might not be, but that still remains to be seen (heard).

Indeed, although I think you maybe able to perform analogue recordings using the WMC-NWR1 cable, which I'm intrigued by! There must be an app and an A/D converter inside these walkmans. But yes unfortunately there's not a low noise microphone input or optical digital input. As it's running android I wonder if you can download the likes of the TuneIn pro app and record radio.
