Well, I don't know the final answer to this question yet. My tube LD MKVIIIse is not overly warm and I like it in the combination with the NOS1704 and Senn HD800 so far... Yet, I will assess all possible combinations of my gear in the following months (e.g. NOS1704+Phoenix etc.) to get the final answer.

I'm going for a MK LD VI+ as it's cheaper and a better fit for Low Ohm cans according to LD and the thread.

I want to slap some Tung Sol tubes in it though! Either way, I may upgrade to a PCM Dac one of these days

I have more impressions now and can say you that the combination NOS1704 > LD MKVIIIse > HD800 is magical. The HD800 is so musical in this setup that I prefer the NOS1704 (optical) over the M7 (USB) sometimes in this configuration (but not in my repro chains). Of course, the detail and soundstage are (much) better on the M7 but there are albums on the NOS1704 that just present your music very nicely without highlighting flaws in the recording. In this way, bad recordings are more enjoyable in this HD800 setup...
