Does the MK2 still have the jack rattle issue? And, is there any creaking when you turn your head?

My mk2's have a jack rattle issue, though for others they don't. If I let the cable dangle and shake my head a little, the jack rattle is present. However there is no creaking at all. The pivots and hinges are the smoothest mechanisms I've ever had in a headphone, despite taking them in -25°C weather; they operate just fine. I unfortunately can't say the same for the stiff earpads and cable though.

How about the whistling issue?

I'm going to assume that the whistling issue is when the wind creates a high pitch sound.

These do not create whistling at all, the only thing you may hear is the microphonics coming from the cable. Although I haven't had an issue with microphonics because the -25 weather freezes the cable up and prevents it from moving...

SO are they only an upgrade in bass?

I can only give you an indefinite answer between the 1r and 1rmk2.
I've only had the MDR-10R (not the 1r) and 1rmk2 together for a day before giving the 10r to my dad. Between the 1rmk2 and the 10r, the 1rmk2 definitely has more solid bass than my ATH-A900X, but less mid-bass than the a900x. Although it's a flat bass response with decent sub-bass. Although the warmth does bleed into the mids a little.

Since it's flat, I had to EQ the bass an extra 10db when using them as portable usage. I won't get into the midrange and trebles to keep this post short (unless if you'd like me to do a comparison on the a900x vs the 1rmk2's...

All in all, I'd have to say I paid for the aesthetics and comfort for these headphones.

I love the A900x and I haven't heard a closed can that sounds as good. They don't destroy other cans, but their combonation of a wonderful balance, a rediculous soundstage, and great comfort makes them a good can.

The rmk doesn't look like much of an improvement though. Did Sony pull an AKG with this one (since they just love to re hash headphones over and over again)?

I have no experience with the AKG line and their constant rehashes (well except the AKG Q/K's), but what I think is that the A900X sounds a lot better in my opinion than the 1r-mk2... and I paid double the price for the 1rMk2.

The a900x has cleaner and clearer mids, more extended treble (might be due to the 8-10khz spike), punchier and cleaner bass, wider soundstage, and it has a less warmer sound signature. I'm not a fan of warm sound signatures (in which the Sony headphones have in common) and that's just my preference.

What the 1r-Mk2 DEFINITELY does better is the comfort and aesthetics. It's extremely light, really soft pleather earpads, soft headband, and it's damn sexy.

Hi guys. Any other coments on the mk2 version?
This week i sold my momentums and got myself a pair of used mdr 1rs for 70 euros (yes it was a bargain but also it did not came with the regular cable and the original box).
My pair although used its not that bad. First of all yes i also have the jack ratlle but i quicly got i black o ring and the problem is solved. The oring stays a bit out of the housing but since it is black and since i got the black and red version it just looks like a part of the housing and matches really well with the overall design. A slick fix actually :-)
About the creaking on the hinges.... It seems to be there a bit, but to be honest i only notest it when i turn my head to my shoulders and its not a very big noise. To be honest, on the move i can move my head left and right freely and the creaking is unexistant. As i said the creaking only happens when i turn my head to my shoulders, and its only like a small click sound that comes fro the hinges that hold the cups. But in order for this to happen i have to move my head from shoulder to shoulder very quickly and with some agressiveness (animal style). So overall all yes there is some creak but i guess it will not be a very big bother as you guys can see from my description. The woese problem is indeed the jack but the fix is really easy.

About the sound.... To be honest i think i am going to end up selling them.... Not my kind of thing.... I loved the momentums and only sold the (3 pairs) because i could not get a proper seal\fit. Next to the momentums, my cals, and my hd25s the 1rs sound a muddy and the vocals seem like they are muffled (like buried) and i am not liking this very much... I dont know if the previous owner made any burn in but just in case i am burning them and right now they must have about 40 hours at 2/3 the volume on my 4th gen ipod touch.

So, love the looks, love the smoooooooooooooth adjusting system, love the soundstage and the soft pads.... Oh and also the fact that they are over ear... Unlike the momentums!!!!

What i dont like.... My ears touch the drivers a bit and to be honest i dont think i am that big eared.. About 67 mm ears and they do not stick out that much...
Also not liking the sound very much... Not that is bad, but to be honest i can only enjoy them with the rock or eletronic eq on my ipod touch (bass and treble boost), and still like that when i switch to my hd25s..... Damn..... Clarity!!!!!

Overall not bad but yeah, i might end up selling them soon.... But to be honest i am tired of trying premium headphones for outside use.... I dont see my self dropping 250 euros or 300 for a pair of kefs or b&ws.... I guess ill just stick with my hd25s or buy a pair of amperior as an extra pair since now they cost about 130 euros new on amazon....

My quest on trying to find a portable use over ear is definitly not easy.... Really loved the momentums sound, looks and feel but the non over ear feel and bad seal when oi turned my head just killed them... :'(

hahah you should try the akg k545 next. you can find em for $200ish & people say that they are better than the momentums. another option is the NAD Visio HP50 at $300.

however, you probably won't be able to be going that budget friendly if you are looking to upgrade over the MDR-1Rs. You are looking to throw $200-$300 for sure if you are on the hunt for closed, portable sound rivaling the Momentums. I personally would skip the b&w in my opinion as the momentums are just as good if not better at $100 cheaper from my experience, and I'm sure that the k545 vs Visio option has sound quality rivaling it so I would look at those options first.

Lets not forget about the KEF M500, and maybe the ES FC300 I'll get tommorow.  Oh, and the ATH WS99.

I didn't forget about those. the kef m500 is ON-ear. the ath ws99 i have no experience with but seems like the sound signature is bass-boosted & non-neutral. guess we need someone with both the ath ws99 & the momentums to compare for pedro

So, I guess I've been scammed or they really are discontinued? Any one know if the MK2 have stopped being listed in the first countries getting release, like Asia, Australia and so on. Hope I will get my refund!!

What's the best alternative if I want something else than the r1:s? AKG 845BT, Bose aw2bt? sennheiser? I like clear sound, good base and nice detail in the mids. Want them to work with all kinds of music! The perfect cans, haha. That's what everybody wants, right ;-)

For the higher end headphones, it's really hard for me to distinguish warmth and muddiness. I associate fuller mids like the a900x with warmth, and the q701's as colder. Although I don't have any two headphones on par in terms of clarity, with one that is cold and the other as warm... I don't think the mids are muffled though on the MDR's, it just feels recessed a bit.

Does the MK2 still have the jack rattle issue? And, is there any creaking when you turn your head?

Unfortunately there is still a jack rattle issue with the MK2's would I completely empathise with you, I seriously don't understand why they wouldn't fix it...it seems easier enough to fix.

However on a brighter note there's creaking but I did notice when you bend the headphones slightly it makes a slight creaking sound but that may be just my pair which im getting a repalcment for due to small chip marks on the chrome.

that's really silly.

If you referring to the MK2s they shouldn't be discontinued. Here in Australia there still being sold but the normal 1R's have stopped being produced.

I'm sorry to hear the news :(
