If it is, so is everything else on the market.

Just curious, what was the output Z of the PHA-1? I actually don't mind slightly highish output Z ~5 ohms. ~5 ohms OK. 50 no.

Not sure what you mean by this.

The only known difference in the PHA-2 is the addition of DSD.  This discussion is entirely relevant and the definition of "on-topic".

No it's not on topic. The topic is very clear.

A discussion on the merits of DSD would be substantially better served in its own thread than wrapped into a thread specific to a single portable device. Hopefully however much of a waste of time some folks think DSD might be, it is surely not restricted to the PHA-2.

I believe that PHA-1 have 10Ω output impedance.

Yes, about 7-10 ohms.

Ahh, not ideal, but should be fine with most IEMs or headphones. Even though the UERM I would use with the PHA-2 are not a good technical match in theory (they have really low nominal impedance and a really screwy impedance curve) 10 ohms output Z is actually too bad - takes the dryness of the UERM away a bit.

I'd say the discussion is tangentially related. I mean, should the effects of ~10 ohm output impedance also be branded off-topic and be addressed in another separate thread dedicated to such? Either way, the DSD merits/demerits discussion was already nipped in the bud more than ten posts ago. No need to get all worked up about it.

Besides what else is there to talk about? I mean, does anyone have the PHA-2 in their hands right now?

Sure, if we twist and turn enough, we can find a relation but does it serve the discussion of the PHA-2 as well as those coming looking for info on it to take the thread off on such a tangent.

Furthermore, it takes away potentially valued commentary from a DSD specific thread which could be a lot more use to interested parties than a thread mashed into one on a portable DAC/AMP.

The fact that details on the PHA-2 are currently scarce doesn't mean we're well served by taking the thread odd into territory or marginal relevance.

Keeping the thread on topic even if it's quiet to begin with serves users better, I believe. It rather sucks to find a thread on a piece of equipment you're interested in only to have to dredge through loads of commentary of doubtful use or relevance.

Of course, people are free to decide for themselves are at total liberty to take the thread into detailed discussions of Pamela Anderson's latest cup size if such things grabbed them.

Sorry if this has been answered, but what portable DSD sources are available for this?

As of now only the AK120.

Thread Starter

The Japanese version of the DX100 also plays DSD files. Of course, those probably won't work with the Sony DAC. However Onkyo will be releasing iPad application to allow for 24/192 and possibly DSD. That is supposed to come later this year.

Agreed, which is why the DSD discussion ended 15 posts ago. Let's get back on topic.
