Anyway, Dragonfly is an USB DAC that only output analog signal. It doesn't do USB output and therefore there is no jitter reduction to speak for. You seem to be worrying about an non-existing problem.

Ahh. that's right! I forgot that the Dragonfly was 3.5mm out. OK. Thanks.

[Weekend has passed]

So what's the verdict Rudi? ZX1+PHA-2 in comparison to CLAS -dB/Duet (or some other DAC/Amp combo you may have)?

And with what headphones?  Effiicient?  Inefficient?

Beating the dead horse:  There is no way the PHA-2's paltry output (only 90 mW into 32 Ohms) can compete with the HiFi-M8 (about 700 mW into 32 Ohms) when using power-hungry headphones.

Given the equipment Rudi has, if I wanted to use anything but the most efficient IEMs and headphones, I would go for this chain:

ZX1 > PHA-2 Line Out > HiFi-M8

This takes advantage of the PHA-2's no doubt excellent DSD-capable PCM1795 DAC, while bypassing its under-powered amp.

PHA-2 specs can be found here:  http://store.sony.com/gsi/webstore/WFS/SNYNA-SNYUS-Site/en_US/-/USD/ViewProduct-Start?SKU=27-PHA2

HiFi-M8 specs can be found here:  http://centrance.com/products/hifi-m8/

Here are the comparison between Sony Stag vs ALO + Cypher Labs Class -DB 2.00 VRms

Set up A:
Source : Sony WM ZX 1
Dac / Amp : Sony PHA 2
Cable : Sony Hi Res stock

Set up B:
Source : IPhone 4s
Dac : Cypherlabs Class - DB 2.00 VRms
Amp : ALO Rx 3 B
Cable : lod to mini USB Moon Audio silver Dragon V1
Mini to mini diy

Set up A and B:
Headphone : LCD 3
Cable : SAA 4 PIN balance cable + 4 PIN balance female to mini oyaide

Set Up A :
High : less sparkle than set up B
Mid : natural and neutral midrange , less clarity than set up B
Bass : very good impact bad bass detail , set up B bass Is fuller and more weight and faster more lively
Separation : very good that we can detect the position from the instrument very clear
Set B has slightly better separation
Soundstage : wide and depth are very good ,set up B has wider and deeper

Power wise :
Set up B has bigger / more power than set up A
The power from set up A is on par with set up B in MID gain

The winner is set up B
Overall SQ : more clarity more transparent , better and clear and clean midrange , Bette bass impact and more weight and better Bass speed

IMO

Set Up A

Rudi,

Thank you for your tests. Few questions :-

1) is your backend IC between the CLAS -dB & Rx Mk3 balanced or unbalanced?

2) Any chance you're able to test the same setup but with a different pair of headphones like your Signature DJ? The reason I'm asking this is because the I'm not certain if the PHA-2 has good synergy with the LCD-3s

Cheers! And a Happy New Year!

I wish you all a Happy New Year 2014
All the best for you All
God Bless You

Thanks for that comparison Rudi!

It's easy to dictate tests from my armchair, but I would really like to get your opinion of the same two rigs (A vs. B), as above, but using your most efficient IEMs - so that you could evaluate the SQ of the two systems without the huge difference in power output being a factor.

I wouldn't be surprised to learn that the Sony rig can outperform the far more powerful rig, when using transducers that are not jeopardized by the 90mW output of the PHA-2.

Happy New Year to you, too!

Mike
