The X3 is more transparent and revealing, with better IMD and stereo crosstalk performance. However, it's warmish in character as the AD8397 is probably Class A biased, leading people to think it's not as "clear" sounding as it actually is --- SQ-wise, the X3, short of the yet-to-be-released X5, is FiiO's best quality product and it will hold its own against the DX50 and AK100. The F886 is definitely the lesser sounding DAP, even though the sound signature is less warm overall. The cooler tone makes the F886 sound superficially "cleaner", but it's not really cleaner. The stereo image is flatter and less dynamic, and I can hear interference from its other electronics. Bass lacks body. But it doesn't matter, I'm still keeping the F886 over the X3 because the UI is leaps and bounds better.
one is a power house when the other is really not
one is a full android phone without phone, the other can't do anything else than play music
on has a big ass touchsreen the other has none
one has micro SD slot the other hasn't
the x3 places instruments forward(as more in front of you than on the sides), the sony is really focused on how wide it can go and wide it goes! (clother to the dx50 in that respect)
and ofc prices!!!
I don't think sound should be the reason to pick one from the other. from my standpoint, if I was only focused on sound I would have bought a dx100 when it first came out and be done with it. I did not because a dap has to comply with my everyday needs more than it needs to sound 3% better.
