The X3 is more transparent and revealing, with better IMD and stereo crosstalk performance. However, it's warmish in character as the AD8397 is probably Class A biased, leading people to think it's not as "clear" sounding as it actually is --- SQ-wise, the X3, short of the yet-to-be-released X5, is FiiO's best quality product and it will hold its own against the DX50 and AK100. The F886 is definitely the lesser sounding DAP, even though the sound signature is less warm overall. The cooler tone makes the F886 sound superficially "cleaner", but it's not really cleaner. The stereo image is flatter and less dynamic, and I can hear interference from its other electronics. Bass lacks body. But it doesn't matter, I'm still keeping the F886 over the X3 because the UI is leaps and bounds better.

Hm, thanks for the comparisons! What headphones were you using for your comparisons? I'll likely be using the fairly sensitive 32 Ω V-MODA Crossfade M-100 with my portable media player.

I was originally leaning towards the F880 because of its nicer-looking user interface and WiFi connectivity, but it looks like the X3 might be it for a pure portable media player. I was pretty disappointed in their E12 amp, so I was hesitant about the X3.

If you don't mind the crummy UI, then get the X3. I used an UERM for comparisons.

one is a power house when the other is really not

one is a full android phone without phone, the other can't do anything else than play music

on has a big ass touchsreen the other has none

one has micro SD slot the other hasn't

the x3 places instruments forward(as more in front of you than on the sides), the sony is really focused on how wide it can go and wide it goes! (clother to the dx50 in that respect)

and ofc prices!!!

I don't think sound should be the reason to pick one from the other. from my standpoint, if I was only focused on sound I would have bought a dx100 when it first came out and be done with it. I did not because a dap has to comply with my everyday needs more than it needs to sound 3% better.

Really? Have you seen smartphones *ahem HTC One Max* lately?  I rather like the size of the F886. The only problem is that the form factor is so thin, and there are no rubberized grips anywhere, it's like holding a bar of soap --- I'm always scared it'll slip out of my hand.

Exactly. I'll gladly take the lesser SQ of the 886 over superior-sounding products for a substantial uptick in usability. I can't possibly pay so much attention to my music when I'm out and about.

Damn, don't know if ok-guy has noticed the "tac" as you call it in the f886. I wanted to know if the "tac" was also featured in the zx1 (not that I have any means of getting one as it looks right now). Also does anyone know if the zx1 has the noise cancelling 4 ring headphone jack, I'll rephrase, does it even have noise cancelling in the software as an option?

no noise cancelling and no radio on the ZX1 (at least that's what the first announcements said).

and Prathan told me that no "tac" was audible with the 334.

so that's good news, even if this is a hefty price to pay to remove a small noise. an amp would do the same, so choices have to be made!!!!!!! :)

Anyone have good sleeve suggestions for the F880? I really am worried about it slipping out of my hand. I need to have it in my hands while atop pedestrian-filled sidewalks of Asia, so a Pelican is out of the question. Also, access to the playback/volume buttons would be good. I wonder if any of the Xperia cases (e.g. for Xperia M) work for it?

sony has not even disclosed the dac used in f886,this makes it clear thats its not that good.

the usp of walkmans is good clean interface(even non android ones) and the clear bass.

but reading the comments here i think they could have done much better than they did in case of f886

hi,

In what models is the "tac" noticed,  European units or units sold in USA and Japan?

Thank you all.

Thank you all.

I had the European version, it had the "tac", from what I've gathered the Japanese version has it too.
