There is really no need to root a device like this, except that is because of enhanced functionality (like adding an SD card). The device itself doesn't have extraordinary hardware, what it does have is an excellent sound and screen. Of course, I also like to root my devices, however other cellphones have more functions that can make use of root...

There are quite a number of audio mods available on xda. If the recovery has the capability of flashing a zip file, then we can easily flash those audio mods and improve the sound or increase the loudness. Getting an image of the ROM is comparatively easy.

that rant should tell you why people doesn't want to mess with the OS without being completely sure that they can revert changes.

Bro, I get it. All the rooting stuff is just for those, interested. I never asked you to root your device.
Just a mere request to check the recovery mode for me. That doesn't involve any risks.
Still, if you don't wanna, I'm okay with that. No problem.

I wish I have more time to get this done, but I just have too much crap going on right now.

Great review. Gives a good feel for the device. And that cable linked at the end is a nice find.

What earphones is it that comes with the F886? I thought it was just the dap but I see some kind of earphone in the product box.

That is the UK player, it goes as loud as my NWZ-S545... not much quantity here but it is loud enough to be heard in the streets with cars and public. No degradation of sound quality in my opinion.

Do you guys use any of the sound enhancements settings? Which ones do you suggest/not suggest? I don't really use anything other than clear bass, feels like they will somehow ruin the purity. Do DSEE and clear stereo even work?

It's like a PO Box but free. Amazon will ship the item to the Amazon Locker(located inside 7 Eleven in the US) and they will send you a code to retrieve it. Good for times when you are not at home to get the item.

Only the ZX1 comes without headphones, my F887 has some snazzy white NC ones (I won't be using them), European Walkman's get non NC ones. They're ok sounding and good to get you going if you're on a budget, served me well when I got my WM-Z until I could afford other IEM's, the better the headphone the more you will enjoy your Walkman.

They do work and it's all down to personal preference if you use them.

Got my white F886 in yesterday. Really snazzy looking device with a lot of genuinely cool DSP options. I'm currently running it with only DSEE activated and it sounds great with 320 kbps MP3. Jury is still out on how it stacks up to iPhone 5 iOS 7 though (which I consider to sound really excellent), but it currently feels about as good, haven't really scrutinized or A/Bed between the two as I'm just coming to grips with Walkman. At the moment though I'm really annoyed by the lack of control on volume compared to iOS, the F886 ramps up and down in too few steps, making it very difficult to dial in a sweet spot.

mine came with noise cancelling and it is the euro version, and i must say again they sound pretty good for stock earphones!I also thought the volume was way to low but i only had the master at max and the other one halfway, shame about the volume cap though,it ok with my iem,s or my sony mdr 1r,but the x3 is a different beast power wise, which can drive the he400 even at low gain!
