How would you compare the listening experience, to a ripped CD, converted to FLAC ?

CD and FLAC are pretty much the same. My auditive capabilities go as far as easily identifying any mp3 from a lossless source, even with the highest quality settings. However AAC vs FLAC is rather difficult, if not impossible to differentiate for me.

All in all I have all my music on FLAC on the desktop and AAC 192 kbps on the walkman, differences are too subtle if not almost close to lossless for me using the F886, in the S545 were very apparent though by the muffled instruments.

I realized how close to lossless it was on the F886 while listening to vocals, which are extremely clear and detailed. Keep in mind that I'm comparing this now with my speaker setup, which consists of a properly grounded PC using a creative Z soundcard conected with a QED cable to a Sony CDX-GT350MP amplifier, which drives a JBL GTO328 two way speakers (tweeter and medium range) and a Logitech S220. All of them balanced to my likings.

Note: Obviously the bass is not the same... but the other frequencies are quite nice.

My F887 arrives tomorrow, £335 delivered to UK plus another £40 for case & screen-protector (arrives Tues).

I got a very accommodating seller in Japan will help with Customs etc., will even do a deal through Paypal (goods) to save you more, saved me £50 on a PHA-2 (I bought the F887 on his Ebay, could of saved another £30).

I got hit for £20 Customs but that was my own fault for putting a value of $50 (USD) which takes it over the £30 limit, a $35 value declaration will be Customs free.

how does it compare to the DX50 and Studio Third?

how should people compare those 3 daps? they have zero common ground.

dx50 is one of the few very powerful portable dap so obviously it would interest people with harder to drive cans who do not want a proper amp added.

sony made a choice with the amp section so it ends up being a pretty weak dap. obviously again people with sensitive iems or looking to plug it to their favorite amp might like the sony.

about the studio, I think it's a hissing piece of crap with no UI so I won't argue for its case.

but I know where I'll go when I look for a non beta UI and a decently shielded dap.

what interests me about this sony is what sony usually fails to do right, output impedance, and hissing. if some hiss maniac (like shigzeo ^_^) happens to have it I would love to know if it's hiss free.

a866 is passable on sensitive iems and ok for most

f806 is bad with most iems.

my old Swhatever was hissing even more than the F.

Thank you for your feedback, Vect. I am new to the FLAC experience. I have ripped my entire CD collection to FLAC, and I have to say there's an obvious difference in detail, across the whole soundstage. ( I use winamp & serviio server to my Oppo 93 player. ) I like the sound so much, that I rarely play my CD's now.

I've only ever owned MD / Hi MD players, so these Walkman's will be a new experience. If they replicate the sound of above i'll be more than happy !

I have the new Sony MDR-10RC headphones, which i'm very pleased with, so I will look forward to the combination. ( When I decide which player to buy ? )

It's very frustrating about Sony's availability ( and release dates. ) of ALL their new products. October release dates gone by, e.t.c. The only product that is available, without source problem, are the headphones. Come on Sony, WE WANT THE PRODUCTS, NOW !!!

Was that with PriceJapan, and DHL delivery ? ( Is the £20 customs included in the £340 ? )

Nice to hear. Apparently Price Japan has the best price right now for the F887 £275.

FLAC/TAK/APE and some other lossless formats are supposed to be lossless, meaning that they don't add or modify information within the original audio source, indeed that's the purpose of lossless audio, to preserve the original source information. Whatever is happening with the detail across the soundstage in your case... well, that's something weird to say the least.

For music on my desktop I use Winamp with the stereotool DSP only for the declipping capabilities, which I must say, the effect is subtle but appreciable.

I also have owned a Hi-MD walkman, it was the MZ-NH700, curiously enough never used a Hi-MD disk in it, only the standard ones, I had to carry on a huge case with all disk in it but it was well worth of it, later on I used a PSP and then the S545. Yes... I used the soundstage program, not exactly nice but oh well, it's still there.

Sony lost the war to ipods quite a while ago, but listening to them is simply... well, for me, not good. With this flagship models they are getting into iPod territory, hence low production on them because they don't want to produce more than the public demands, but I bet they didn't see their own success with this series, even better, the ZX1 is supposed to sound better than the F886 and there is already a lot of interest in it, I wonder if the demand for those will be even bigger...

I really didn't liked sony by the PS3 fiasco, but it seems that their new CEO is really pushing the good old sony that I used to know, that produced hardware like no other.

I got my ZX1 from them... I bought the F887 from them but then they told me there were no stocks in Japan until next week so got a refund. I asked same thing from other sellers on Ebay but none could get F887 apart from the guy I found.

Price-Japan for F887 - the minimum Customs declaration they will do is $110 (£30-40 taxes)

if you bought from Price Japan the total would be £305 approx. plus Customs (£30-40).

You must ask your seller to see if they will do a deal over Customs. The actual cost was not a bug-bear to me as that's what I was expecting, the Z1070 cost the same when I bought it (sadly sold now & missed).

I see. I might just get it later then when the price comes down a bit. Just wondering Noble-Geezer do you have the Z, would you be able to do a comparison between them?

I look forward to Noble G's review. I might just buy an 886, rather than wait for the 7 ? ( but looks like i'll have to wait for even that, seeing as Sony's "availability" changes from day to day, week to week ! )

Unfortunately I sold my Z1070 recently but it's sound-signature is well imprinted on my grey-matter, I can honestly say I miss that player, absolutely loved it.

I'll try and give a valid assessment of the two.

Thanks Noble-Geezer that'll be great. Yeah definitely a terrific player. From the review that sicko posted previously this player seems to be even more to my liking since there is an improvement in details and it is more refined than the Z while still maintaining the Z's bass.

I've just given Sony U.K. a ring, and they say, expecting F886, mid December. I asked about F887, and they have no release information for that, as yet.
