I hear you man, I was using the Q701 to test the sound, comparing it with my Modi and Vali. I'm using the f886 with my Modded Mikros 90. The modded Mikros sounds like a mini version of the modded q701's I have minus the sound stage. Even the sound sig of the Mikros doesn't synergise well with the C5, it sounds better straight out of the headphone out of the f886 . I was actually considering the E12 but talked myself out of it as Fiio tends to color the sound a bit, but now I'm regretting that decision.

Regarding the f886, I find it has superior sq to both the X3 and the DX50. But its still not a reference level. I just wish it was more refined. On complex passages with a lot of instruments, details although present, gets smudged together. Did you experience a break in period with your f886?

I'm wondering if the e12 will give me the sound I wan't or if I should just go for a DX90:confused:

It also seems to color the sound a bit!

I got mine @ 05/15/2014. First I was perfectly impressed. After some time I was no longer impressed, tended to be disappointed a lot. But today I am fine again like on day one. This is how it goes with every new device I get. I think it is a brain thing and it takes some time to get over the different sound presentation of the new device. But that is only me..... i would not be a good tester as I need too much time to adjust to the devices, may it be DAPs, AMPs or CANs.....

Thanks, I'll give it a chance for a week or two before completely making up my mind. I hope my initial impressions change!!

F886>LOD > Meier Stepdance@ 15 volt > AKG K702 OMG what a synergy very clear and fast. Sooo detailed!!

F886>LOD > Fiio E12 > AKG K702 nice, but much warmer and with the bass boost on, very helpfull

Btw. both amps on low gain, but volume maxed out.

Thanks for this! I should' have got the E12 but tried to act the smartypants and ended up shooting myself in the foot with the C5 :P.

What other dac do you use as reference?

One thing really impressive with this player is how extremely neutral it sounds without the sound enhancements. The Fiio X3 and dx50(which is claimed to sound neutral) sound colored in comparison(I sold them both).

How does the e12 sound with the f887 compared to the straight headphone out(without the E12)?

God that's sexy! I'm contacted Headphone Bar and I'll be exchanging the C5 for the E12. Yay!

Love how the length of the f886 matches up with the front plate of the E12.

it's a little wider and cooler, a bit bright on its own for my taste anyways but by not much, but still sounds great, I like how the e12 adds that lushness to it a little more body and depth at the cost of sound stage I can live wit that.

Can you compare c5 and the e12 with f886 if by memory only sometimes these amps need to burn in and or you adjust to what you are hearing

Oh forgot to mention I don't use the lo sounds to thin for me although I haven't heard it with the e12 on high gain have to give it a shot

Lo does sounds good now forgot to turn off the clear audio

Lo is technically better but dry I wish I could get the best of both worlds but still prefer the ho on the f887 it just adds a bit of stereo and or depth and has a euphoric sound to it lo sounds like its 2d where ho sounds like it's 3d, to me anyways but both are great

Line out to the C5 sounds colder, a bit more sibilant, less musical and high frequencies are a bit harsher. Not a fan of the pairing. The C5 I have is the first version and the bass boost switch turns the C5 into a fart canon, not recommended. I'm sure it'll get better with a bit more burn in but I don't wan't to risk the return period as I'm shipping it back.

The headphone out sounds smoother.

Will let you know how I find the E12 to compare when I get it.
