Sony XBA-H1 and XBA-H3 Hybrid Dynamic and BA IEM - Page 157

post #2341 of 2841

I tried out the tape mod again tonight .... and I have to say it's good. Not sure why I didn't like it the first time but now I have found that it tightens everything up not just the bass. I like :)

After a lot of fiddling with my IE800, I think I have got the best sound out of them at last. I had to hack it with an extended tube so I can put a bi-flange tip on it to made it sound the best.

Non of it's stock tips fit .. it's either large soundstage, clarity, no bass with small tips .. or all bass and nothing else with large tips. It's such a dumb idea for them to make proprietary tips.

Stock tips also gave me vocals that sound so far away. This mod has made the lower mids and vocals pop out a lot more.

At the moment the H3 stands toe to toe with the ie800 in every way but I think the H3 does much better mids .. it's got lushness and smoothness in female vocals that the ie800 doesn't have. And this is without having to fiddle with fit and tips. I think even my ATH-IM70 and Heaven IV have a special quality to them that make me want to keep them ... both being vocal specialist in their own special way.

I'm not sure where the ie800 fits in for me as my other way cheaper iems does just as well and really hasn't given me that 'wow' moment yet.

You mentioned earlier you were also getting the 846's to compare to. Anything to report on that? Thanks

Agreed on all counts, these taped up (I used black electrical tape for stealthiness) H3s are seriously good for female vocals (alongside many other things!) smily_headphones1.gif

They just pull STRAIGHT out, NO twisting, etc. Mine were very stiff to remove the first time, Make sure you grip firmly right at the connections there is an illustration of this in the manual. When you're re installing, you need to line them  up  properly before pushing them together.

Xba h3 just went "on sale" for 329 usd on Amazon. Anyone that copped theirs when it was 240, well played...

Funnily, after having the EX1000 for a few years, I think I finally understand it...

Hugely wide reaching analogy, however - I would say that the EX1000 is to CD / digital what the HA3 is to vinyl...

To these ears, the HA3 is relaxed, calm, lush, analogue almost, whereas its older brother is crisper, lighter, faster..

Annoyingly, the Senn IE800 sits pretty much right in the middle of the two...

Whilst we're at it, the XBA-4 sits very near to the EX1000 in that scale, but the coloured upper mids detract somewhat...

...My personal standings would be (and, remember this is as subjective and arguably subject to change as can possibly be!!):

Bass definition...

IE800 -> EX1000 -> XBA4 -> XBA-H3

Bass power...

XBA-H3 -> IE800 -> EX1000 -> XBA4

Mids definition...

IE800 -> XBA4 -> EX1000 -> XBA-H3

Mids power (richness)...

XBA-H3 -> EX1000 -> XBA-4 -> IE800

Treble definition...

IE800 -> EX1000 -> XBA-H3-> XBA4

Treble power (extension)...

IE800 -> EX1000 -> XBA4 -> XBA-H3

Overall sound integration / tone (musicality)

IE800 -> XBA-H3 -> XBA4 -> EX1000

Soundstage...

IE800 -> XBA4 -> EX1000 -> XBA-H3

Comfort (fit) in ear......

IE800 -> XBA4 -> XBA-H3 -> EX1000

Cord [lack of] microphonics / stiffness (stock)...

XBA-H3 -> XBA4 -> EX1000 -> IE800

So, if we have a point scale from four (left) to one (right), out of 40 points I have...

Sennheiser IE800: 33
Sony XBA-H3: 23
Sony XBA4: 22
Sony MDR-EX1000: 22

Pull this apart as you wish, especially when you consider that the H3 is my current go-to IEM smily_headphones1.gif

I got mine for 240, I'm still trying to figure out the sound. They're very surprising at times, at first they sound like all my other HiFi gear (simple audio beauty) but I will notice a passage of a song in a different light than usual. Kind of hard to put into words really

Anyway I'm looking for a new DAP (currently using a fiio x3 and an imod) I was wondering if the dx90 or the fiio x5 would have good synergy with the h3, I'm leaning towards the dx90 since it's more analytical and the h3 is more musical

Anyone here tried the JVC spiral dot tips on these? I just bought some Ortofons (which I'm loving), but after reading up on the spirals I am very intrigued.
