BestMobile Setup for Under 1500.00?

So Ive been reading and demo'ing different combos for awhile now and feel like its about time I get my mobile setup...

Im debating whether I should go for HiFi M8 coupled with my Ipod Touch 3G(already own) and a really nice set of HPs

OR

A modded AK100 + a portable amp(I like The Continental,but am open to ideas/suggestions) and a lesser HP

I realize that the AK100 can play 24/96 files and the Ipod cannot...I also recognize the added storage capacity advantage of the AK100 over the Ipod too.My main concern is music quality and "Bang for your Buck" factor.I dont want to go over 1500 usd,and would prefer to keep it as far under that figure as possible without taking a substantial hit in sound quality.

I do have an ever growing collection 24/96 files that Id really enjoy hearing properly, something the Ipod cannot do,but where I live the AK100+Continental will run me about 1300-1400 usd(still need to get the HPs too),whereas the HiFi M8 will run me about 750.00+headphones,but lose the storage capacity and ability to play anything above standard CD rip quality.

Thoughts?Ideas?Comments?Suggestions all appreciated.

Or 3rd: save up another $500-600 for an AK120 + M8 LX combo.  The AK100 is nice but there are just too many short comings compare to the DX100 and AK120.  The AK120 is a very good stand alone DAP, and you will crank it to 11 with the M8.  Interestingly you can actually get a AK120 + VentureCraft SounDroid Typhoon + toslink interconnect for about $1600 from VC's shop in Rakuten here.

Which shortcomings are you referring to that the modded version doesnt fix?

I was talking about stock and not the RWAK100 or -S, and you know that the RWAK100 is $900 already right?  I am sure you can find another DAP with optical out and 24/192 for less.

p.s. even with the AK100 you don't need to mod it for the M8 LX, as it takes optical and not analog in, and you are not going to use it stand alone, so the 22 ohms output impedance don't matter.

Well,if my math is correct the M8 LX+ modded AK100 or AK120 + headphones=about 2100 usd....theres got to be a less brutal way to abuse my wallet

Why do you need to a RWAK100?  You are using it for and amp, most likely a M8 LX, and that's defeat the point of having <1 ohm output.

AK100 ($700) + M8 LX (700) + toslink interconnect ($60) = $1460, cheaper if you go with other DAPs.  A modded RWAK100 only make sense if you want to use it as is and skip the DAC/AMP, which I think will be better for you.  So you spend $900 on a RWAK100 (not S) and leave the rest for a pair of headphones, like the Mr. Speakers Alpha Dog.

Here in Thailand the prices are slightly higher

AK100 unmodded- 750.00
AK100 modded-    830.00
Ak120-               1320.00
HiFi M8-               833.00

HD600-                433.00
HD650-                470.00
KEF500-              450.00
T1-                     1160.00

The only other hi-end DAP Ive found here is the Colorfly C4- 930.00

Buying online and shipping them in isnt an option due to import taxes.

Can you do without the M8?  Because if you want to keep it, then you need to look for a cheaper DAP that does 24/192 with optical out.  How much is a iBasso DX50, FiiO X3, and the VentureCraft Go-DAP DD Socket 1 over there?

Did you mean "mobile walk around the house" or "mobile commuting"

With the exception of the KEF M500 none of those headphones are really practical for commuting. You can still do it but not really portable. I think amping the M500 might be overkill so long as you have a semi-decent sounding dap or smartphone

Yeah the setup would serve dual duty, the KEF500 is the only true mobile HP of the lot,but I will bebusing the setup at home as well.
And yeah the KEF500 sounds pretty good plugged straight into an Ipod, but sounds a lot better amped IMO

I would do the same if you give me the money to spend..

"Bang for your buck"

Headphone: Philips Fidelio  X1 Limited Edition - Home use, well regarded the gold edition and seems easy to drive...
IEM: Aurisonics asg-2 (requires at least 100 hrs burn-in to control bass, then they become very fun iem) - portable use if u love bass to feel the music
DAP: iBasso DX50 (just a hunch, no fact to support as of now) - must wait for review/impression first

Portable Amp: optional for later upgrade
Cable: optional for later upgrade

Please also try to make a short trip to Hong Kong, Singapore or Tokyo where you can demo most of these gears if internet buying is not so convenient...

Im lucky that here in Bangkok both Jet Live Audio and Jaben Thailand both have a lot of gear to demo and mix and match...
I guess my real issue is I havent been able to demo any DAPs...dont know what the sonic difference is between an Ipod vs AK120 other than what I've read

I cant do IEMs,I have munchkin ears :)

If u appreciate high res files, just buy the x3 or dx50 its not a lot of money and probably can resell at a minimal loss...

I think u r also aware that there r many ways to tweak the ipod sound as well..

Trust me, the difference between the iPod and AK120 is huge.
