Use DX50 solely as transport and then pair with iBasso PB2 (amp) + DB2 (Dual WM8740 DAC).

I know Fiio X3 allows to bypass its internal DAC by coaxial digital out.

this or just get a used Dx100 or R10 lol

alright.  Finally got my DX50.  Initial impressions:

Build quality:  Top Notch.  How well it holds up is yet to be determined, but its very well built.  Nothing loose or flimsy.  Has a great feel to it.

Screen: Better than i expected.  Thats not saying much but it'll do.  Touch response is FAR better than what I was expecting.  Comparing the response and UI to the Colorfly c3 would be an insult to the DX50.  It did take awhile to build the database from the microsd and not all albums are showing but I'm fine with searching via directory.

And now for the sound:

Fairly neutral; amazing seperation and soundstage (which I think is one of its strong points).  It definitely does a good job compared to other "audiophile" daps that I've tried (C3 and CK4).

HPO:  Quite amazing with JH13's.  Can't say I'm missing anything or find anything lacking.  It does a spectacular job with imaging.  It handles layers soooo much better than what I've heard from other daps.

LINEOUT:  Was a little taken back that the lineout can be adjusted with the volume control.  Something I'm not a big fan of personally as I have no clue on where to set it at.  Paired it with a Tralucent T1 @ 200 and while it sounded better to me than the HPO I don't think the added bulk is worth it.

More detailled impressions will be done when I have more time with it.

DX50 + T1 + JH13 + Live Rodrigo and Gabriela = :L3000:

Thanks man well right now I am busy like hell to load this little guy with enough material to do some major testing here. The user interface is very simple, nothing extravagant but to be honest I don't mind that. If you are looking to have a decent unit that you can lug around without extra weigh, this guy is it. I am thinking that this might well be the way to use it. I paired it with the D12 in coax mode and those iBasso guys are right, they both are made for each other, the D12 with the double Wolfson 8740 is just an amazing amp. While I am waiting for those files getting loaded I am listening to what others have to say about it. So far though I don't really feel I spent a ton of money for what I am getting, kinda guilty pleasure wink.gif

I used the SanDisk, works great and is very reliable but the Patriot are no slouch, you should be fine with it.

Thanks for the reply, I will order the Patriot card while I wait for my DX50 to arrive.

this is exactly whats happening with me, I've progressed to missing tracks being played now after some re-naming, albeit not in the right order and it seems to add them to the end

very odd indeed

Would you say it's worthy enough for Queen? :D

Do you not find that the coax output automatically downsamples HD files? I have seen the sampling rate display on my DAC_1 read 96KHz on 192KHz files and 44.1KHz on 96KHz files...

Also, can anyone please confirm whether the DX50 can output 24bit 96/192khz signal via digital out?  Doesn't work for me.  Is it 16bit file only?

I don't have anything available that would allow me to find out if it does and my ears don't seem to be able to tell one from the other, someone earlier mentioned that, maybe it was you but can't say for sure. What I heard out of the D12 was extremely nice to my ears.

got mine around 1pm, charged it, tried it with a sd card, heard a slight but audible background noise with my jh13, packed and sold it around 4pm.

none shall hiss!

soundstage is bigger and higher than with the x3 but depth isn't as good. dx50 gives a more usual imaging for a headphone when the x3 puts most instruments in your face (what should be above your head, ends up mostly in front of your eyes.

about delays and beta like UIs, it's a tie really. I guess the firmware race will decide who's the boss.

both have power above most other low price daps and won't need an amp on average phones, unless you really have a great amp or want to change the signature.

overall I'm glad to see some new blood but I'll stick with the X3 for a while.

Well if it's any consolation, I find the DX50 sounding better than the iPod 6th gen which initially I thought were going to be relatively similar being bright because of the Cirrus Dac but not quite, the dx50 seems to be brighter, it's actually clearer, the iPod sound felt slightly muddled in comparison. I paired the DX50 with the intruder and really like the results, somehow it has softened the brightness.

This thing needs a proper case. The X3 has one...
