Also for me, the high gain setting renders the best sound. Doesn't matter if I am using the IEM's JH13 Pros or headphones.

For me, gain setting is genre/recording specific.

High gain = Classical

Mid gain = Industrial Metal, Jazz

Low gain = mainstream pop.

Only use high gain if you have a Toshiba memory card and a Samsung battery - it will give you sweet mids and great soundstage and impactful bass. Make sure you are facing magnetic north if it is a wav file, though.

God, such audiophile nonsense.

Everyone knows you have to be facing true north when listening to a wav.

I've now got my mind set on the DX50, but had a few questions

1. Might be a stupid question, but will I see a noticable difference with my current setup? (I plan to use Future Sonics MX5 earphones)

2. Would it be recommended to carry on using the E17 with DX50 or could I just get away with using the DX50 on it's own?

3. Can the DX50 drive my HE400 headphones?

Thanks

1. The DX50 on its own sounds substantially more detailed than my computer + E17.

2. I tried this and I could detect no difference. I suspect that the quality of the amp in the E17 is about the same as that in the DX50.

3. No idea! I use the DX50 with Westone 4R's and it is good. I tried my Grado 325i's and it drove them fine, but the Grado's are very nasty unless properly EQ'd (on the computer) so no use on a DAP.

However I did find that rubbing the SD card with the skin of a recently deceased llama whilst grounding my body using a bare left foot (just didn't get the effect with my right foot) substantially improved the SQ (My IMO, of course). ;)

I think compact flash still sound best to me. I'm working out a mod to accommodate the larger card. I've a very smart idea, to reduce the battery size by half. So the mod will be seemless. I will start charging everyone a premium for the mod service as I strongly believe it is a genius idea.

After a lot of criticism, I'm going to say well done iBasso, you've crafted an absolute belter of a DAP. Thank you!

1. Yes, I believe that you will be able to hear a difference. The DX50 would be a considerable step up from your current set up. E.g. Better separation, imaging and detail IMO.

2. The DX50's own internal amp would suffice. I believe it's on par, if not better, than the E17's. By pairing it with the E17, you might be sacrificing a huge part of portability for a minimal improvement in sound quality.

3. I don't own the HE-400's so I can't answer this. Sorry.

Hope this helps you smily_headphones1.gif
The dx50 can drive the HE500s to loud enough levels and sounds not bad either

I imagine the DX 50 could easily drive the HE 400s to a loud listening volume.

I'd also add that I think the DX50 definitely sounds better than the E17.
