Lol seems like they've been saying that since last week. But hope for the best! biggrin.gif

It is. The Irivers have a UDA1380TT all-in-one DAC/Preamp/HO-Amp. This one was very cool at that time for a portable player but there are much better dac/amp combos on the market (also in the DX50). Some people did not like the hiss of the headphone out and for me it had not enough power. The Amp of the DX50 is more detailed, has more power, less hiss. I love my DX50 for the sound.

But just for you to think about: there are many things on which the Iriver IHP-1xx are better: Battery life, Button control >>> Touchscreen control (IMHO), Recording, FM Radio, read display always (when backlight "off"), shorter startup time, maybe the best rockbox port ever (everything 100% working), possibility to do a RTC mod, no output capacitors on Headphone out , smaller, lighter, optical input.

For me the reason to change to the DX50 was that when I want to take the big headphones with me (Mad Dog, HD650), I don't like to carry 2 devices tied together that need separate charging and have in total more weight than my launch. But there are many things that I miss about the good old IHP-120...

There is something called RKbatchtool which has been linked to in this thread that will completely reformat your device.  However, it runs on Windows and you have a Mac.  If you have a way to run Windows apps on your Mac, you should have no trouble.  If not, you may need to find someone with a Windows machine to help you out.

Post # 4   http://www.head-fi.org/t/691843/windows-doesnt-recognize-dx50

Note- in the past several pages of this thread someone was attempting to use it.  There are also directions included with it.

Good luck.  And you might want to get in the habit of pulling your card out of the DX50 and putting it in a card reader before doing things to it.  :basshead:

Thanks. I'm with you on all points re iHP. It is great DAP that deservedly had (and it seems like still has judging by the prices they still command on seconhand market) the cult following. BTW you forgot to mention pretty cool remote controller.;)  Also UI is so intuitive with that joystick that I can navigate thru without looking at it when it sits in my pants or jacket pocket. My rockbox build on them is probably ten years old, but I never I felt need to upgrade it - working like a charm.

5 or 6 yers ago I was checking out some DAPs with more modern DAC/amps circuitry, but at that time nobody else made these with digital out and that was a dealbreaker for me.

What I most likely do, is buy DX50 but still keep iHP's and see what my ears tell me and then decide whether improved SQ will win me over the other conveniences that these good ole bricks can still deliver. I will certainly keep one iRiver, remove battery and store it indefinitely.  Man gotta have at least one.

Its been a long time since I was here on these boards. Too many other hobbies to take care of.

Cheers.

Had a rare blip from my DX50 yesterday. The album had finished playing, so I went to change it, but the screen kept coming up with "Locked" no matter what I did. A reset (held power button for 7 seconds) fixed it and it's been fine since.

There's a switch on the lefthand side just under the "On" button to lock the screen.  When you switch it "on,' it says....".Locked."  Did you accidentally switch that on?  Or are you saying that the word "Locked" appeared even after you slid the switch to "off?"

Oh, and parsing the words "few days" means.... whatever.  I guess the firmware will be released when they release it.
