Alright. Take this with a grain of salt as I only demoed W4 for 30 mins.
Overall, W4 is much better. Better clarity, detail, imaging, and soundstage. Soundsig of W4 is also more balanced. They have about the same amount of bass, W4 has slightly less mids, and more extended treble. But purely speaking of subbass rumble, MDR7550 simply does it better. I guess it's due to being a dynamic driver. Personally, I really like them both. Considering that MDR7550 is more comfortable and cheaper, I say they are both very good for their price.
Are you sure thats a good idea 'twisting' the cable like that?
I think you should use a cable wrap from some of the other Sony products.

7550 really sound great through the X1061 (compared with the EX1000) Bass is warm and soundstage is huge.
I thought these were discontinued but they are up again on the Sony website.
Original replacements cost $100+.
I'm pretty sure they'll go through abuse, but why risk it. A cable wrap eg. from the XBA series will not only protect it but also make it look neat.
Anyway, have you tried them with the X walkman?
Source/link for 7550/EX800ST cable replacement?
I Have spoken to a local store in hong kong that specialise in high end iem and headphones, the shop know someone who claims the cable on the ex600 offers the best sound quality when used on the ex1000, ex800 and ex7550.
He says the cable for the ex600 is actually made better than the cable for the ex1000, to improve sound quality.
I actually have the ex600, and might consider purching the ex800st from japan next month, I will have to try them out and compare the quality.
In the mean time, is it worth getting the ex800st right now, since its over 3 years old since it's release.
I called up Sony last year and they said replacement run around $100-$110 including tax. The wires have not shown any signs of strain or damage after a year, so I'm pretty sure they will last a long time if taken care of (like all other things in life)
