Hello,

The headphones that I've narrowed it down to from what I've read about are the AKG 2K40 MKII and the AKG K271 MKII. There is a fairly big price difference between the two but I realise that they should last me a very long time although I would still rather spend less than £150.

I'm buying headphones strictly for listening purposes and I will be using them at home 99% of the time. I wont be doing any recording and a majority of my listening is though an mp3 player (I play flac on it) and I also don't have a amp. The genres that I listen to the most are metal and rock with bands such as: Porcupine Tree, Opeth, Wintersun, Black Sabbath, Atheist, Blind Guardian, Dream Theater. If you have any other recommendations then feel free to say. Thanks for any help

Heya,

The K240MKII would be an excellent way to go. It's going to give you a better sound stage, better mids, and weirdly enough a better low end feel than the K271MKII.

If you need alternatives to explore, look into:

Sony MA900

Hifiman HE300

AudioTechnica AD900X

AudioTechnica A900X

Beyer DT770 PRO LE 32ohm

Brainwavz HM5 (or Fischer Audio FA003)

Very best,

Very best,

I'd recommend the ATH cans for rock, as I own two pairs [trying the Ath AD900x very soon as well] and I really enjoy them with rock! I actually enjoy the Akg K550 with Rock as well, and there happens to be one for sale here on Head Fi for around 99 [Euros is it] and head fi sellers are always willing to help you with any first time purchases!

I'm leaning towards the K420's as they seem great for someone new to all this and are a great price but I did read a lot of opinions on the two and people were generally picking the K271's.

Yeah that is the way to go but I can only buy online from places like amazon and I don't really like returning stuff through that unless I have to + I'd have to have them both side by side I guess. My dad has some old sennheiser HD 497's that I could compare them to though.
