I'd have to say, IMO, that it's psychological mostly.

My (unsubstantiated) theory is:

You get ~70% or more of total sensory information from your eyes. When it's dark you can't see and your brain puts more emphasis on your other senses, like hearing, touch, etc.

There are less distractions to take your mind - both conscious and unconscious - away from listening to sound.


I may be totally off, but that's how I see it.

The best part of waking up...

...is speaker listening the night before. I got the music in me.
Kids are finally asleep, neighbors are in rooms, not connected contiguously to my livingroom. The warm glow of tubes and blue lights (LEDS of 2003/2004), and music flowing from my speakers into my wanting ears in a dark room. The best time of the day.
Now if only I can make it past the 3rd song, B4 I fall into blissful slumber.
