FAQ and Advice of X3 - Page 9

Multi album tagging issues

As of firmware 1.31 the X3 does not respect the Discnumber tag, so multiple albums are played out of sequence (all track 1s followed by all track 2s...).
The workaround is to use the track numbering to ensure all files are played in the correct sequence.

I am thinking about buying a X3. Should I wait until issues are worked out? A 64gb card formatted FAT32 works fine right? Also, does the X3 dock to the E9?

Thanx

If you were to wait for all issues to be resolved, you'll wait forever. 90% of the bugs have been resolved and I and others are enjoying the use of the X3. Alas the X3 does not dock to the E9 - that feature was removed a long time ago, before the X3 went to prototype.

Personally, you will have a hard time finding something as well featured at such a cost effective price.

Which player do you use now?

If you are interested in the X3 because 24Bit, let me tell you it's absolutely not worth it! I have never met a person that claimed it could tell the difference between 16 and 24 bit from the same source. I have done this blind test multiple times and it's simply not audible. (Dolby has discovered that lower sampling rates create more brain usage although a difference was inaudible but the test was 128k mp3 vs CD. So at CD quality the brain does not need to fill in any gaps. 24 Bit is multiples of overkill.)

So unless your source is lacking amplification wise (background hiss, distortion, high output impedance) there is not much use.

I would not "upgrade" from FiiO E17 or iDevices. The result will be too similar. Actually I found the combo iPhone+E17 better.

But go ahead and purchase if you don't have a portable media player yet.

As mentioned, the user interface is pretty outdated and there are still plenty of bugs that need to be fixed.

I hope both issues will be resolved in the future, but I would not bet on it.

I'm currently usin' an old Rockboxed iRiver H340 (upgraded with a 60GB HD and bigger battery)

I'm lookin' for native FLAC playback 1st and formost. Quality internal DAC is next. 24bit is just a nice bonus. I'm running it to a Sansui 771 so the X3 just provides a nice solution now that I can expand later. ie: Headphone amp/DAC.

Yeah. I don't think FiiO was targeting making a great consumer DAP with great sound with the X3. The development seems to have targeted headphiles with features that are buzzwords for them like 192/24 bit support. And then OGG and APE for those 20 people that might buy it just for that (lol). As opposed to implementing a more user friendly UI, replaygain (or soundcheck) support (which I keep asking about but get no answer), or a more robust EQ. They should have just funded a Rockbox bounty to create the firmware. smily_headphones1.gif

At this point, I'm just going to wait and see if they get enough sales that they can justify a major feature/usability revision of the firmware. Not holding my breath though.

Why would there be any such risk?

because every time you switch on the pc, it charges a little before "he understand" to be fully charged and switches from red to green status... or no?

Thanx... Found it already, either I checked just before it was made available, or I was looking at a cached page. Either way, I already have it installed now, and the DAC mode is a nice feature to have.

Also, DAC mode worked under Ubuntu 12.04 just fine. Didn't have time to test higher bitrates as the battery on my laptop was dying and the PSU is still on my desk at work.

does this firmware upgrade change the player sound quality?
