Could anyone help me out with some recommendations?
I am look for a lush, fun, dark, musical headphone with good overall bass. I want something to compliment my overly bright & sometimes harsh Beyerdynamics T1 Tesla.
I'm basically looking for a headphone for hard rock, R&B & hip-hop music.
I narrowed it down to these headphones:
My impressions of the Alpha Dogs have been mainly from these 3 reviews/articles
He basically gushes about the Alpha Dogs vs much more expensive flagship heaphones.
Also in later Headfonics reviews of the Ether & Prime, they claimed they went away from the fun signature of the Alpha Dog & thought they were not as good.
-Bass rivals the Audeze LCD series
-The Alpha has the more clear midrange than the LCD rev2 & a more pristine bass quality?
-The midrange is more clean and clear than the Beyer T1, AKG K812 & Hifiman HE-560??
-Alpha also emits a noticeably larger sound stage in every way, most notably in stereo depth and airy qualities over the T1???
-Not great soundstage, but decent
-He-500 has deeper & harder bass than the Alpha Dogs, but also harsher?
-Alpha Dog mid's are neutral
-Midange ranking: LCD-2 > Alpha Dogs > HE-500.
This reddit comparison thread
Bass impact: LCD-2 > HE-500 > Alpha Dog
Bass enjoyment: LCD-2 > Alpha Dog > HE-500
Mids lushness: LCD-2 = HE-500 > Alpha Dog
Mids enjoyment: Alpha Dog = LCD-2 = HE-500
Treble air: HE-500 > Alpha Dog > LCD-2
Treble enjoyment: Alpha Dog > HE-500 > LCD-2
Soundstage width: HE-500 > LCD-2 > Alpha Dog
Imaging: LCD-2 > HE-500 > Alpha Dog
Which are the most accurate, they seem to give different opnions?
Awesome reviews! Good references for the future! Never thought of Reddit ....
The Primes have better bass and more nuance in the high end. They sound more detailed and spacious than AD. I loved the Alpha Dogs, and was surprised that the Primes noticeably bested them. They are my new reference headphones, putting my Fostex 600's and Senn 650's aside. I look forward to getting the new Ether C in a few weeks to try Dan's next evolutionary step. :)
Fostex has found several more lots of older inventory of T50s in distribution around the world and we have been able to make several large purchases since we announced end-of-life or we'd already be out and finished with those products. Fostex's US distributor just informed us we may have an option to buy a large number of headphones they found at a distributor overseas so the answer is I'm uncertain.
Demand is the highest we've had since we launched the headphones and with the material we have on hand we'll be out of all Mad Dog and Alpha Dog headphones within ~4 weeks. If demand stays this strong we'll purchase more, we will then have enough to get to the holidays.
Mine is only about a 10K system, and I agree totally. the Primes are so good that I have a reference for tuning and adjusting my main rig, which is good since I'm moving this month and have a whole new room to work with!
