Are the Ads a step up over the Sennheiser HD650s? Looking for my next headphone..

If that question can not be answered, then the equation that defines value can not be completed.

You have a dollar amount you're willing to spend for quality you find acceptable. This is a luxury proposition, and has nothing to do with value.

I don't think price really has anything to do with this until he reaches his conclusion about how they compare. Higher price does not automatically guarantee higher performance, though it does often imply it. Also, I don't see why not being in the same price range should disqualify the XC as a challenger to the AD. I assume he means that he's testing to see whether it technically outperforms the AD, regardless of price.

They also don't have same sound signature, I think LCD-XC's sound signature is more close to the Mad Dog than the AD.

The 650's are open back. If you can use headphones in an environment where open back is acceptable (quiet place where sound leakage doesn't matter), I would make my next pair also open back.

If you need isolation, then the AD's are about as good as you are going to find under a grand.

To me sound quality of the ADs are a bit above the HD650s, but on the same league.

IMO, that's the problem we are facing in this hobby and any others.  Pre-conception about quality is too dependent on the up front price tag.  Pricing has a huge impact on product evaluation and personal bias.  But I do agree with you that the threshold is very arguable...

That's something that DF can hear for himself as well and I'm sure that he'll report his findings on their sound signatures. This doesn't make it wrong to compare them anymore than it would be wrong to compare a Sennheiser HD6XX to an AKG K7XX. Those two headphones will sound different as well and there is a significant (though nowhere near as large) price difference between the two, yet I see no reason why they cannot be compared and reviewed against each other.

okay, i bit (pun intended). just pre-ordered a pair. while i'd love to try some of the open-back orthos floating around, my listening habits require me to have something closed, and for the price, it seems the the ADs are the ideal contender. so maybe by the end of feb/early march i'll be able to post some impressions. thanks everyone for their input...was very valuable and helpful for me in making my decision.

since I need to buy a  " NON Leaking " headphone to complement my TH-900, can someone tell me, of the SigPRO, the AD and the XC, which one LEAK the less sound outside ?

I have not tried the XC but of the other two the AD is one of the best passive isolating hp's out there. I have followed the XC thread and members there report that the AD is better.

gL!!

Better? In terms of weight, comfort, isolation? I have been following the XC thread too and I don't remember anyone mention AD is sonically better than the XC. Care to quote the source?

Not sure, but I think @MattTCG may be referring to the quote directly above, related to sound leakage.

Pretty sure that, as aamefford said, Matt is referring to isolation/leakage control and not sound...
