HD650's are veiled.  Oh, wait - I have a pair now (no veil, wonderful headphone).  Uhm.... DT880's are too bright.

Sorry - couldn't keep my fingers out of the cookie jar...

This may be true.  But lately the people that are self-enchanted seem to be those who are critical of the impressions.

In the meantime, it looks like the AD owners are less than willing to share their experience.  Me- I don't care, as I still don't have any rep to loose.

But the negative tone in this thread does not seem to be effective in encouraging more feedback.  Unless only about 10 or fewer of us actually own the AD, which I doubt.

It actually surprises me that there are so few impressions. I thought a bunch of people actually ordered the Alpha's. Unless they haven't received theirs, or are taking their sweet time and cannot even post a 1-line impressions, it's baffling. I think only Matt, a couple others and myself have been the only ones writing what we have heard. Oh well... I'll see if I can write a "proper" review on these later... (have a few I want to talk about, especially the Yamaha HPH-MT220 which I find splendid with just a couple of cons...)

Please do!

In the meantime, I have decided to keep the AD's.  Actually, 'out of my cold, dead hands' comes to mind.  I'll try to write a lengthy comparison to the 5LE's later this coming weekend.

In the meantime, the soundstage cannot approach the 5LE, which is a very under-rated headphone.  On the other hand, they do exceed the Grado 225i's for width and depth.

Somehow, they make neutral fun to listen to, which to me is an oxymoron.  I have found myself getting lost in the material with them, and not even notice that I'm wearing them.  That's enough for me, to be honest.

I can't wait to read more impressions.

LOL!

I guess that at this point, everything is welcomed! ;-)

But I trust you will provide excellent impressions seeing that your other "babies" will be surrounding the Alpha's (and looking at you with bad intentions) while listening!

What Jude said in his video review, was translated by some people into silly things like " they sound like they are open headphones " and " they are better than any other headphones " and so some people ordered them right after Jude's video in a temporary burst of enthusiasm.  Since Dan is shipping in order of the date/time of the order, then the most enthusiastic are those who have already received them.   Those are automatically going to be the most disappointed, no matter how good the headphones are.  This is because the difference between two really good headphones, that are similar in style, is very subtle.

In other words, the first orders, the ones who have received them, are "impluse buys" ("OMG 3D printed headphones OMG"), and two months passed between that impulse and receiving the headphones.

Of course, there are some whom this does not apply to (and they have posted in the thread), but a lot who have not posted impressions fall into that category, IMHO.

(BTW, good example of what I am talking about - the person I know who most disliked the first JJ Abrams Star Trek movie, was also the person who was the biggest Star Trek fan... )

I didn't pre-order the Alpha Dogs until about 1.5 months after Jude's video. I got my Alpha Dogs early because I bought a used pair and cancelled my pre-order.

You are probably right to some degree.  Impulse buys are rampant and some people probably were expecting a different experience.  For those of us that have experience with the T50RP driver we knew what to expect and with Dan's special molded cups were thinking that the experience could be taken to the next level which I believe it has.  The sum of the subtleties make AD special for some and maybe not enough for others.  If one is expecting 2 levels of jump then the outcome might be making them re-think their purchase.  That's fine.  We like what we like.

I also think that some people like to listen for a while before making statements or write reviews.  I'm this way.  Others like to post right away.  It varies.  Some people don't check the thread very often.  I recall one review for another piece of gear being written after only an hour of listening time and at the other end of the spectrum some people will listen for weeks before posting.  I think I've made 2 posts in relation to a specific topic (for example soundstage) rather than a full outright review since getting mine 10 days ago.  I think I've had about five 30-minute listening sessions.  I work about 60-70 hours a week so I don't get a chance to listen as much as I would like.  Also do not forget the lazy factor.  We get home, listen, then have a drink.  No writing gets done.  As a multi-planar owner (past includes HE-500, HE-4, LCD-2, plus my own modded T50RP) I'm pretty happy with the AD..........impressions to come.............as well as a Q Audio cable to compare to the stock cable.

Some Sony MA900 comparisons.

The Sony MA900 is a bit darker and has slightly bloated and slower bass compared to the Alpha Dogs. The MA900 being an open headphone, unsurprisingly has better soundstage. The MA900 sounds closer to the Alpha Dogs than the HD600 and K701. Will add more details to my review thread.

I think it would be good if you could discuss the AD soundstage a bit because you have not mentioned it much

Interesting... my MA900s arrived today, coincidentally... the bass is slower than the Mad Dogs (same driver as Alpha).  I find that the MA900 certainly does not have an excessive quantity of bass (not sure what you mean by "bloated" if not that).  MA900 soundstage and imaging are both excellent, probably close to any other in those regards.   The MA900 is slightly short of low midrange quantity (cf cellos, acoustic guitar).  The MA900 sounds like crap for the first hour, and improves further in the second hour. :)
