Like I said, it's because of Tyll's weird compensation curve. With other measurement archive sources (like GoldenEars) these headphones tend to stand out a lot more in terms of their freq response.

But Jerg, what about things like resolution, soundstage, openness, congestion? A FR graph isn't going to help you really know what a hp sounds like here is it?

It's not obviously. I'm just saying that Tyll's FR measurements are not the best for comparisons between headphones, relative to a few other big headphone measurement archives.

I have heard nearly zero depth in HD600's soundstage... Decent width but no depth. Actually, both DT880 and especially x7xx headphones are better here (DT880 wider, x7xx wider and deeper). IMHO

(but still, I would take HD600 over x70x any day so it's not that I dont like HD600)

Ok.

Ah, gotcha.

Judging from Tyll's graph, that's not really true. Looks like the treble is a decent amount quieter on the Momehntum than the AD.

If anything, they look a bit like the SR-404 graph from Tyll minus the 2k hill area on the Stax.

Well I didn't mean they look exactly the same, the Momentum has less upper mid and treble, but I meant they are both quite flat and not missing / recessed with any part of the frequency response.

I just did some sine wave tests and I noticed a driver imbalance issue with my Alpha Dog. The left side is louder by 5dB from 100hz to 150hz. Perhaps the bass tuning is uneven and I should turn the bass up on the right side. The tuning looks visually the same though. I can see two screw threads on each side.

Edit: Nevermind, my amp volume pot was too low which caused the imbalance.

The HD600's soundstage is actually fantastic in terms of proportions. Not only does it have good width and depth, but it has equal height for a presentation that is very natural.

It's not the biggest when it comes to sheer size, but imaging, height, depth, etc are all great.

I agree, it is not always good to have a MASSIVE soundstage for music, depending on the music it can sound too distant... Good for games and films though...

Is there a burn in period for the AD?  If so how would that affect the FR as adjusted before shipping and do these go through any sort of burn in before being adjusted and shipped?

One thing is interesting is all those early comments about color preferences seem to have gone mute ;)  I think people are in general extremely impressed with both the color and finish of the finished product and seem to have forgotten they would have preferred it in white or black or aqua marine ;)  Also I must have missed the part of the thread when the copper colored adjusters got replaced by black.  Was that decided by popular demand?

The Black arms were a treat that Dan put in for us. I think it makes the HP look even classier, and I have seen them and they are stunning.

I think the black sliders may actually have a lot to do with the stopped color complaints. Makes it look so much better all around. Plus now that people are starting to hear them there's more to talk about than finish.

By that token, the LCD-2 has a similar FR graph as well, in addition to a few other headphones that probably don't sound like the MD...

LOL I know, right?

The more I listen to the Alpha Dogs the more I'm disappointed by the lack of soundstage and air. I expected so much more after watching Jude say that it sounds just like an open headphone. To my ears, the Alpha Dog's soundstage is no better than a fairly good closed headphone. I recall even my LFF Paradox had better soundstage. When I switch back to my HD600, I get so much wider soundstage and airer sound.

Sorry to go against the hype but this is honestly what I hear and I'm a little disappointed. Everything else about the Alpha Dogs is amazing though.

Edit:

Pic of my AD with my HD600 and amps

I like your honesty, So many people just go with the hype these days and exaggerated. Due to the closed nature it's going to be impossible to get a closed phone to sound like an open phone. The best example of a soundstage is probably my DT770 they outdo my k702 in that regard but in terms of air I have not heard a comparison to the open backs.
