I don't think I'll ever look at my Emotiva the same way again. That flirty vixen.

A lot of things are better than sex. I'm a bit partial to food and breathing myself. All rather necessary for a good session of reproduction though.

tl;dr - Alpha Dogs > sex?

Time will tell...time will tell...

Great amp, but it's a freakin tank on a desktop setup.

It's not dead flat but it's not too evidently colored as well...

The pictures always seem to hide the massive depth of the casing. Ridiculous. I'm using them to stack a whole year's worth of papers when not in use.

Lol. Funny cause I'm a college freshman. Really though, what aspects are better than the emotiva? I hear that the emotiva seems to add things in terms of liveliness that no other amp seems to be able to provide

It just has a lot of dynamics. Gives you a good punch in both the treble and the bass. I don't find the mids recessed personally. I HATE recessed mids, but for me the Emotiva is not recessed. I think it's tricky because the bass and treble punch so hard it creates the illusion of recessed mids. Or at least that's what I feel.

I really didn't like the Modi Emotiva combo. I tried this a few weeks, but then again I also had the Concero around at the same time, so maybe I was spoiled. The Modi sounded like a mini-Bifrost which meant a little edgy for me

Nooo don't say that! That's the combo I'm going for! Haha
Are these impressions with stock velour pads? Or jergpads?

Oh it's good enough. Don't worry. You'll have fun. Modi is one hell of a DAC for $99. Like I said it was not good for the Modi that the Concero was sitting right next to it. I would recommend you use this free program called "Fidelizer" for the Modi. It really didn't do much for the Concero, but for the Modi it was like turning on the lights.

Are you using a custom made cable for your MD on the a-100? I ordered a SE AD so I'm guessing I'd have to get a specially terminated adapter if I decide to go that route?

Emotiva has a sale every other weekend it seems like.  No, really they have sales very often - every holiday for sure.  Then you can get the amp for under $200 no doubt.

I use this cable now:

I can sell this cable I was using and it works really well.

The Norse cable costs more than the amp I'm sure biggrin.gif

What did that do to it and is it MAC compatible?

If you're using Mac OS, I would recommend using Audirvana Plus, Fidelia, or ButPerfect (available in the Mac App Store).

I personally use Audirvana Plus. You can also try Audirvana [free] as a long-term demo for Audirvana Plus.

How about J. River for MAC?

That's still in the beta phase from what I recall. Maybe I'll go check on their website right now. smily_headphones1.gif

Oh, it was just updated 4 days ago!

I'll try it out. When I used it in the beta stage, it just felt like a cheap port to OS X (i.e. the entire interface felt like it was designed for Windows).

Ugh, my trial period ended and upon requesting a trial extension, it did absolutely nothing. So much for that. Do you think $50 is worth the investment? I purchased Audirvana Plus when it was $49 and it was well worth the money spent. I don't know if I can justify spending another $50 on a media player whose future and performance remain a mystery to me. I mean, there's not even a single screenshot of what it looks like.

Im guessing that is better than VOX...

I know a few people expressed their desire to have some changes made to the Alpha Dogs. I found just the place that can make that happen. It was only a few miles from me and I stumbled upon it by chance.

The threads are not painted.  The threads are cut into plastic.  We evaluated nylon and metal screws.  Nylon is no-go because they are too easy to strip the socket and we'd have to tap the threads first.  So we use a self-tapping set-screw.

Since the screw is in plastic, everyone should be clear this is not a tone control for constant adjustment.  The simple way to use it is if you want more, or less bass, turn the screw 1/4 rotation on each side and listen to several reference songs across a few genres.  When you hear it the way you want it, leave it alone.  The threads will handle a number of adjustments, but constant use could wear it out.  The hex keys are included in the box and have a warning to this effect on the bag.

It works, it works well, but it's not for fiddling over and over and over.
